If you want something cool, you're gonna hafta spend some cash.

If you're buying new, the new Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS are cool - but small and cramped.

Subaru WRX is pretty cool, and fast, plus it has all wheel drive.

Hyundai Genesis coupe is pretty cool, but small and cramped.

Ford Mustang might be worth checking out, but V8 version is like $30k.

MazdaSpeed 3 is fast and reasonably priced.

I would say it depends upon who you want to impress.

If you care more what other people think, lease something expensive that can be turned in 3 years down the road for something cooler.

If you don't give a fuck what people think, buy something you like that you can drive for ten or more years.

I was at a car show earlier today when I was discussing a 71 Gremlin I used to drive with a balanced and blueprinted 390 from a 71 AMC Javelin, with a 391 rear end. I used to race Corvettes with it and blow their minds.

I drove a corvette almost everyday for 7 years, extremely comfortable and great on gas... plenty of room in the back...
