I think we have a winner.
Obviously, black folks kill plenty of folks, but I sense that it is more for financial reasons and instant gratification (impressing someone (fellow gang members), getting money, drug deals gone bad, etc.).
Whereas with whites, it always seems to be due to some slight (rejection by family, a women, job, etc.). Whites in this country are EXPECTED to succeed, therefore if there are failures, I imagine the stress is even greater (thus causing a greater response).
Finally, the press sensationalizes white victims. Did you know that you are more likely to get the death penalty for killing a white person than a black person? People mistakenly believe that the death penalty bias is tied to the race of the perp. Not true. It is actually tied to the race of the victim. Kill a blond, 6 year old girl, and you are going to fry. Killed a 40 year old black women, and your chances of the death penalty are much lower. The media feeds into this, and hence, mass killings where there are white victims get much more media play that shootings in South Side Chicago for example.
Access to high powered weapons probably plays into it as well. Can kill a lot more people with a $1,500 AR-15 in a .223 or .308 than a cheap revolver a thug buys for $50 in the hood. |
