It's not the end of the world, but the end of the age.
Human existence as we know it is a science experiment and entities beyond our comprehension take turns with us. Their turn lasts one astronomical age (about 2150 years).
The Bible comes into play here, but it's very symbolic. The new testament seems to be relevant only for this age. In Matthew 28:20 Jesus (symbolic of the current ruling entities) states that he is with us until the end of the age. We are currently in the age of Pisces (thus why Christians use the fish symbol). Before that was the age of Aries (the ram), which is Jews. And before that was Taurus (the bull), which had religious significance during that period. So you've got each controlling entity represented by something that humans then worship. Aquarius is next, but you likely aren't going to wake up to a new religion following someone that delivers water.
Fish are popular symbolism for food in the bible. The age of Pisces brought huge advancements in human food production. Farming, fishing and everything else. IMO since water = life, this will be the age of medical breakthroughs. The degree of effect that has on the current living population depends on how quickly the advancements are made. Remember, an age is about 2150 years and we are just starting this new one.
As for the doomsday stuff..... Noah's flood (which wasn't necessarily a literal flood of water) is said to have been god ("god" being symbolic of the entities whose turn it was) being upset with mankind and wanting a great reset. Mathematically the flood dates to right at the beginning of the age that was two ages ago. So that was them coming to power and wanting quick destruction. There doesn't seem to be any recorded worldwide disasters 2150 years ago, so we can't assume something bad is in fact imminent for the start of this age.
