What's pathetic here is you criticizing things you know 0 about.

Indian people overall are very kind and helpful. When you have no place of comfort to take a shit eventually you do it wherever. :2 cents: One who never left his own comfort zone would never understand that.

sure but why do they not have a place of comfort to take a dump? in this day and age indoor plumbing should be something everyone has. people want to celebrate culture so much but its their culture in part that holds them back. same for the middle east and africa. when your culture prevents you from living humanely its time to let it go.

Nope, it isn't; no self-respecting Indian would take a dump on those streets, they are just too filthy

Phoenix69 01-09-2013 08:54 AM

Any country with a caste system where power and right depend on which family you were born into and where segregation continues to this very day should do itself a favour and quickly sink itself into the sea.

Actually, the Asian style squat lavatory has been proven MUCH healthier than the western style throne.

Have you never pissed outside in an alley, on the side of the road, or against the side of a building?

People without toilets shit wherever they can, just like you piss wherever you can. Every country in the world has homeless people and those who piss and shit in the streets. The only difference is no one is there taking photos of it to show the world how nasty it is, because it's much easier to look down on others than it is your own people. Slumming in England, Canada, or the USA with a camera isn't as exciting or exotic as roaming through shit covered streets in India.

When it comes to why people piss and shit on the streets, they are absolutely the same. People use the bathroom where they have to. It's called necessity. A lot of them simply have no access to bathrooms. And that is not even taking into account the mentally ill who have no idea what they are doing, nor care.

from reading around it seems many indians don't have toilets in their homes because they see them as not necessary and or "impure" as something that will make the rest of their homes impure. its cultural stupidity and its costing lives.

Do you really believe that people in India build houses without lavatories and choose to just shit in the street or are you just trolling like Franck?

these people have tv's, cellphones, etc but can't afford a toilet? that doesn't make sense. its just what i have read, most of it coming from indians themselves.

Necessity. Everyone thinks they need a phone and they can already shit in the street and have been since the beginning of time, so why bother making more toilets?

Developing countries are not easy to pin down to one reason why something is done, and if there are cultural issues involved any change whatsoever can take decades. Most of these places are incredibly complex with their various religions and cultural beliefs, not to mention just not knowing any better due to lack of education. It often defies our version of logic and everything we as westerners have come to know. But many of them say the same thing about us.

This is one of my favorite images. It's funny, but it is a reality check at the same time. I know you've seen it before, but really soak the message in. We can't fathom the horrible conditions they live in, yet they can't believe we shit in clean water. It makes perfect sense for us, but to them it defies all logic. It's not easy to change something like that.

"India is also perhaps only country in world where defecating is also a social activity. One just needs to sit beside the window during early morning train journey to see hordes of men and women defecating in groups along the rail road. Even in large cities, one can see people defecating and chatting at the same time right beside a busy road (I see that every day while traveling to office). I sometime wonder what those guys talk while indulging in an activity which I thought need some silence and privacy. Even dog after defecating buries its waste under sand but not these people. They never clean their own waste. We never clean our own waste."

Good post. I get what you are saying and understand, at least as much as someone who never had to go without a toilet for an extended period of time can. my only real original point was its their beloved culture holding them back in so many areas and this is true for so many people in the world. as someone who grew up more or less 'cultureless', i just don't get why people want to hold on to the past and illogical beliefs so much rather than progressing.

Holding them back? Do you know anything about India's economy?

theres a lot more to a society than just the economy...and the average worker over there is still a slave waiting to be burned alive in their locked factory with very little rights. not to mention the poor treatment of women, poverty, sanitary conditions, etc, etc.
