Because muskets were the latest technology - so citizens had the technological equivalent of government military forces. They didn't specify "muskets", but rather "arms". I don't like every part of the Constitution/Amendments, (specifically the 12th Amendment - Electoral College) - but until it is changed or repealed, I respect and abide by it or work to change it.

This is because everything is a violent crime to them. It is well known they f ed up their own stats by changing the definition of violent crime.

Unless I am very wrong, there are 101 countries who have averages per 100,000 worse than USA, and 103 countries who have better.

So USA is not even in the top half by that metric, and is roughly the median of the countries listed.
