Congrats hope your lady enjoys it. The current shape SLK is the best looking SLK they have produced. I keep thinking they are SL's when I see them. A far classier car than a BMW could ever be.

:) type SLK hair into the google auto-suggest and see what it comes up with, but the OP was right it's generally seen as a metrosexual automobile

This always annoyed me as well. A lot of people write off the entire two seater roadster as a "chick car"... It's usually people who aren't that into cars and have no idea what power to weight ratio means.

Lester Burnham 03-08-2013 06:29 PM

I owned a SLK55 AMG. Was a fun car, but a total chick car. I was parking at a casino and some regular player came up to me and said, "Dude, if that wasn't an AMG, I'd give you a hard time for this." I got a ton of grief over it lol. Finally traded it in for an E63 AMG. An SLK is a great car for the wife, but not for a dude.

Minte 03-08-2013 06:56 PM

Just got back from the delivery. My wife got a headache listening to all the training stuff the dealer has to go through. :)

But whoever thinks that this new model SLK is a chicks car should think again. It's really fast. I took it out for a short solo ride and this thing goes and it's only got 44 miles on it now. So I am looking forward to putting it through the paces after it get some miles.
0-60 in a tick over 5 seconds. The 7 sp trans is excellent.

Congrats on the car

Surprised you'd go with a white one...

georgeyw 03-08-2013 08:06 PM

Looks good, I like the way you appear to deal with cars.

What is the best car you have owned and is that your favourite? Also what is the worst high end car you have owned?

Love white! Doubt I'll ever own another non-white car.

I think the best car I have owned.based on the fact that I owned it longer than eny other daily driver was the E55 amg. The worst was the M3..my favorite is the Porsche (993)911.

Interesting you say the Porsche, just finished watching a show that named the Porsche 911 as the greatest sports car of all time.

Would have thought 996 would be the model - 993 is light years behind the 996.

You guys are very lucky in the US, cars are cheap, that SLK is 100k + over here.

I like the 993 because it was the pinacle of Porsche air-cooled engines. It's one of those cars that really makes you be very involved when you want to drive fast. The lastest versions of the 911 are still very nice, but they don't take much skill to drive fast. The computers do all the heavy lifting.

996 is hands-down the most undesirable Porsche ever made. 991 is where it's at right now, second to 997.

xenigo 03-08-2013 09:14 PM

Minte... what went wrong with the M3?

Was thinking 997 and typed 996. Agreed the 996 took a wrong turn with the ugly lights.

I love porsches, driven 1981 SC, 993 and 997. Pick of the bunch would be the 997, it has all the computing power you mentioned and also had a far better build quality. 997 felt like a luxury car rather than a sports car, that is until you put the foot down :)

The only thing that put the M3 on the worst car list was the SMG transmission.

It was terrible. It slammed so hard under power I was always waiting for it to explode.
I don't like paddle shifters either. The M3 with a 6sp would've probably been near the top of my list, I loved the braking and handling, Good engine, not a lot of torque but good RPM range.

But the damned SMG trans was total garbage!

It's like my Lambo. I think if it didn't have all the computer control it would be scary. As is, it's incredibly fast around corners with virtually no effort. Right after I got that car, I went for a long drive through some serious twistys along the wisconsin river with a bunch of porsche's. After about 10 minutes I was alone..no one in my rear view. I actually had to stop to let everyone catch up. This was with my wife in the car and hardly any experience driving the thing. One of the guys in the group was driving a Boxster and he was actually covered in sweat he was driving so hard trying to keep up.

On that same run there was a fellow that drove a Viper. After we stopped for a break,,he tucked in right behind me and burned me on a straight. I was kind of napping.. I got him on the next corner and really went for it for nearly 5ish miles and when we all bunched up again he wasn't there?? I thought s**T I hoped he hadn't messed up and crashed.
He didn't..he was pissed that he couldn't keep up and just turned off and left.

my business partner has a M3 convertible with the SMG - and he's trying to talk himself into liking it for the last 3 years :1orglaugh

but yeah, that transmission really sucks

After the fact I never could understand why BMW would make such a huge blunder with the SMG trans. Such a great car in every other area deserved a lot better. It left such a sour taste in my mouth it was my last BMW. And there's nothing they are doing today that would lure me back from MB.

this is exactly what i meant - you traded a fun ride for a heavy limousine just because someone else made fun of you. Someone that probably never drove a small 2 seater because his ego couldnt take it either

sad world

You should of heard some of the remarks I got when I bought the smart car.
My only comments were/still are.. I like the car and hand them the keys to take it for a drive before making judgement.

When people say 4 door cars, or SUVs are chics cars I usually dont agree. But if you ever see a normal size grown man, 5'11+ in a car this small. It does look kind of silly. Especially with the top up. The SL is a bit larger and more beastly. I dont even think I would fit in this car to comfortably drive it.

I read that about early smart cars. The trans in the new one is different, but it works fine.

They're designed with this in mind you know, auto designers don't just go "let's make sure no one over 5'6 can fit in here". I'm 6'4 (you've met me) and used to own a Miata. Had a couple inches of headroom to spare. The pedals are deep forward and you sit in a very low position.
