Look at the Chicago public school system. They spend more money per student than anywhere in the country. Their teachers even average about $75,000 per year, which is insane for a public school teacher. Yet good teachers (of any race) can't be coaxed away from their much lower paying positions at white schools because they don't want to deal with students from the ghetto.

These are books. It's pretty clear from your post that you live in one America and think that what greets you when you step out your door every morning is universal. But truly, there is another America, and it's completely devoid of the circumstances and resources you take for granted as you maneveur through your bubble.

Actually Blacks were slaves in this country for over 200 yrs and after the civil war things really werent much better. Things really didnt become vaguely equal until the sixties. Thats not that long ago.

There is a documentary I watched a few years ago called Gang War: Bangin' in Little Rock. The movie is about a guy who was a gangster and went to jail for about 12 years. When he got out he decided to work to try to get other kids out of gangs and off the streets. The movie focuses on these gang members and almost all of them have this attitude like they are born to die. One of them talked about how the reality was by the time he is in his mid or late 20's he will most likely be dead or in jail so he is going to enjoy his life now and having extra money from selling drugs lets him do that. There was zero hope, zero role models and the idea of leaving the gang or the city or even the state and starting a normal, good life where they got a job etc was not even considered.

They did a sequel to it when they went back and revisited the same people 10 years later. Most of them were either dead or in jail, but those that weren't were still living the gangster life. The guy trying to get kids out was making some headway and showing results, but he said getting funding of any kind for his community center and his programs was nearly impossible because the politicians and those with money that would normally donate to a charity just wanted to pretend like this problem didn't exist.

It was fascinating and infuriating seeing the loser/lost mindset of the people.

Fathers raising their kids and kids going to school and getting a good educational foundation and then going on to higher education will cure a lot of ill.

I see those pictures and I see a lot of people who either have been or will be in jail or who are living on the system. I grew up in it. As a kid I lived in a little redneck town filled with white trash. While there wasn't a ton of drug activity (although there was some) there was plenty of other crimes. Most of them were actually sexual in nature and were fathers diddling their daughters or women getting attacked by drunk guys. There was also a ton of domestic violence. There were plenty of people in that town that got arrested on a regular basis and many of them got government assistance of some form or another.

I listed to Adam and Dr Dru this morning on my way to the gym and they replayed the part that started this conversation.

As Adam was commenting on parents needing to be more involved in their kids lives, their educations, need to keep families together, put an emphasis on saving money for bad times etc - Gavin interrupted by saying specifically that "50% of blacks and latinos have no access to checking accounts".

Of course, thats a very comforting message. Who wants to hear "look, some of you guys need to get your shit together. Stop shitting out kids. Start parenting. Start emphasizing education, preach hard work and success!"? These are not things that either get politicians elected and certainly don't get them re-elected. What sells is "its not your fault, the system is against you, the system is broken and i'll fix it for you.... and once again, its not your fault" God forbid people actually start accepting responsibility for themselves for a change.
