While moderation has been lacking around here, one thing that the admins/mods can't control is someone that was previously banned re-registering and starting all over again.

However, it never takes long for those people to expose who they really are and it'd be nice if there were quicker action in getting rid of their second, third, thirteenth nick.

Most of the people being complained about in this thread are back after having their first nicked permabanned.

Yes that can be controlled, because you can keep banning them soon as they show the same trends again.

The lack of business threads is bothersome. I come here to find out "the state of the Industry" which is, in a word, shitty. So I come here to try and connect with others in this business, people with common issues, concerns and problems. Hopefully I can find some solutions to some vexing issues (traffic, billers, ad buys, traffic trades, blog building and the like) but instead find useless BS bullshit (yes I said it twice) on bitcoins, this conspiracy or that, just total waste of time.

As I posted elsewhere the solution to trolling is simple: ban whomever responds seriously to an obvious troll and permanently and IP-ban anyone that makes a thread complaining about a known troll.

And don't ban trolls.

Trolls crave attention and reaction, it's the whole purpose of the exercise. If you ban them then you've once again played their game. You've confirmed that their trolling is working and it will simply be a matter of time before they return.

When you take the troll's bait YOU become part of the problem.

When you make a thread bitching about the troll what do you think the troll is doing? Jerking off at your frustration and rage. The madder you get, the more incentive the troll has to keep on doing what is obviously working.

If instead you ban the posters that are, by replying seriously to the troll, encouraging this disruptive behaviour, then you take away the troll's power base.

Why do you think trolls keep coming back here? Because you're such very easy bait. I guarantee that the troll(s) that got up in your shit with the conspiracy theory stuff is/are reading all of these threads, laughing his/her ass off, as would I if I still was trolling such easy mopes.

And he/she/they WILL be back, probably using some other bullshit to troll you with, but the result will be the same.

We could temporarily place something on one of our sites so that a mod could see hey yeah we do own that site and its a legit site. This would work for affiliate members. Other verification like a phone call to new pro members. Or we could even pay to join, one time fee, which might weed out some of the trolls.

Or set up an OT Category for all the bitcoin and conspiracy and crime and other threads which would be separate from a Biz Category. Any trolls who muck up the Biz Category insta-ban.

It would involve analyzing frequency of posts and when they occurred to get an estimate of behavior. You might analyze certain sentence structure etc.
Of course IP address too but that's easy to workaround.
Sudden activity after a ban from another nick would reference the nick to other that had been banned.

Using fuzzy logic it wouldn't be too hard to draw a conclusion.

I saw a few people complaining about the dick pics, eventually saw one or two examples, and figured that as usual since I don't spend much time here that I was seeing the tip of the iceberg, with the other 9/10 examples buried.

That's because like always no one's bumping those threads. They're there, I just perused the first 5 pages of the forum and found many, but few of them had more than 5 replies and are now buried on the back pages, whereas footman's threads are getting bumped constantly from troll-feeders who think it's fun to play poke-the-special-kid.

I don't think you need new technology or "industry checks". I probably read more than most people but I find it pretty easy to tell who is a troll and who had a nickname banned previously. Half the time they even admit it.

Most of the people who are called trolls here are 80-90% troll/off topic and 10-20% industry or somewhere thereabouts. So they aren't fully trolls. They just post a lot of off topic stuff all the time.

Maybe it's time to simply say that at least 50% of your posts on the main forum in any given 30 day period have to be industry related or you get the boot under the normal system of bans? I don't give a shit myself but I can see where people get annoyed when half the topics are about politics and conspiracies.
