True. Most con men aren't dumb, in fact you have to be pretty slick to be able to troll at that high level.
This is why going apeshit on them is the wrong approach, because organizations like that are borderline cults, and nothing, NOTHING brings cult members together better than an outside force attacking them head-on. It's the tribal instinct kicking in.
Which is why politeness and specially humour work much better. When you laugh at someone's arguments, when it's obvious you're not taking them seriously and you make it clear that they're making you laugh, you take away their power.

The kicker is, in society's eyes, even Jones and Beck are more respectable than most of the people in this business.

Sure there is. The human brain is a pattern-seeking machine. But just because you "see" a pattern does not mean it exists.
There has been psychological studies on conspiracy theories which boil down to this:
When things are really fucked up in your life, when you feel you have no control over events, your brain tries to give events meaning, context by making connections.
Thinking "the Jews/government did 9/11 - Boston bombings" gives that horrific event an "acceptable" explanation. "It was part of a plan by hidden forces, not a random event" and that's in a way reassuring because then you get a handle on what happened and can then "fight" these hidden forces thus regaining control.
It's the same way religion works. Good shit happens in your life? "God is so generous because I'm good". Bad shit happens in your life? "It's part of God's Plan to test me".
