Not entirely true - Pontiac never charged me for the knock and rattle they put in my car years ago. It was free from the factory.

My brother owned a '97 Kia, and it sucked, but that was then and this is now. Kia is excellent. If I were buying, say, a mid-size $20-25k family sedan today, I'd probably going with the Hyundai Sonata only because I like their interiors a little better than Kia's, but Kia's equivalent, the Optima, I think is actually much sharper looking with regard to exterior styling. So it really comes down to ergonomics and appearance in deciding between the two. Otherwise, I think Kia has pretty much caught up to Hyundai's excellent record in terms of mechanical reliability.

Kia quality is good now, as everyone has said. I do recommend checking out the Fords... I'm thrilled with my Flex and I was shocked how cool the sedans were these days when I was in the showroom.

My parents had a Kia and traded it in for a new Accord. I love Acura/Honda and German engineering of course. Going to pick up my new Odyssey in a couple weeks :)

Back in 2000 I wanted a Honda but didn't wanna spend the Honda money so settled for a brand new Kia. As far as point A to B never an issue, only shit that went was normal shit that wears out brakes, alternator etc... Had dumb shit come loose like weather stripping flying out of windshield but cheap car uses cheap parts that break or come loose easier. I bought a brand new Honda in 2010 and personally would stick to Japanese cars over Korean cars as the build quality is higher. Realize they have probably improved since my 2000 model but would still stick with Honda over Kia if you can afford it as build quality and resale value will be higher. :2 cents:

My 17yo son drives a 07 Rio. Good inexpensive car for him.

Yeah that's the other thing--resale value has a huge impact on overall cost of ownership during the period in which you own a car. Cars with better resale value, will end up being cheaper over the long run.

Got a Kia Soul for my daughter.. friggin cheap, but rides super nice, surprisingly roomy and high off the ground. And it had a shit-load of bells and whistles included (sun roof, UVO, backup camera, and way more)..

plus the mpg is way better than my Jeep Commander.. lol
