lots of wishful thinking and dreaming going on in this thread...

in the most simple of terms:
we had an opportunity here. according to snowden himself he still has the most damaging documents of all, unreleased. if the *story* had been able to stay focused on those document, i.e. if they were revealed and damaging, then we had a chance of this being a catalyst for positive change. the story would have maybe created transparency laws and more. instead, the nsa has now come out and said, fuck yeah, we snoop it fucking all man, fuck you, business as usual. the half-hearted attempt, the lack of valor, doomed the entire opportunity. that has everything to do with how snowden chose to handle it. look, a couple months ago it took me about 15 minutes to see the history of how these things go, snowden certainly could have done that. i never claim to be smart but i do claim to look into things and try and base my view on the history, which is what i've done here. lost opportunity is due to snowden. ending up on the lamb in russia isn't good for anybody. |
what planet do you live on that doesn't have a snooping government? :1orglaugh
not saying it's cool, just point out you are not exempt. Quote:

Today, in the USA, every paper, in the gov or its agencies are '' TOP SECRET ,, .... even the toilet paper ...:2 cents: He is a whistleblower, and the country heard the whistle ! |

not only that, but any of the other below the fold stories are about our fucked up politicians endorsing the nsa and their snooping programs. my *problem* is snowden did more harm than good. i'm not saying there's a blueprint for how to become an ex-nsa snoop leaker, but his ill-thought out plan not only defeated any opportunity/chance/hope for change actually caused more harm by putting just enough data out there to have the government defend the nsa snooping and to cause the nsa to say yup, we snoop and according to snowden it's all very legal. . |

them? nothing I am not surprised at all. However, i am surprised at your countries behaviour. Honestly some rednecks/immigrants are still bent outta shape about it here in Canada. One joke about homophobia and the 'why' of it all, generally straightens them right out. if you don't mind the pun : D |

I would love to live in Russia for one year. That's the good thing of being brazilian: we don't have problems with any nation in the world, only internal problems with ourselves.
|
i think snowden really is stupid and thinks whoever associates with him in any way is stupid too. logistically, how does running to hong kong from los angeles or where ever in the united states then get transported to moscow, russia, again, make logistical sense? if he was on his way back to be prosecuted by united states law in the united states?
snowden is essentially a traitor and good for him he has been saved by the russians but i don't really care. |

So I didn't get your comparison. |
good job snowden, today's news cycle is all about how snowden is tired and misses his girlfriend. now that's a story that will create change!
p.s. the same girl he bailed on and left with the rent due. classy turnaround. |
too bad - now i am going to miss him when i'm in Moscow next Thursday

Just FYI: the yearly budget of Moscow is $52.4 billions, so it's a second city in the World after New York ($65.9 billions). For example, the budget of London is only $18.9 billions. |

What Snowden did took balls. He is a hero, and not a traitor at all.
The government-owned media has clearly done its job. |
Quote:
this isn't supposed to be about him. it's supposed to be about the information. but due to snowden being a complete absolute fuckup, it's about whether snowden dies or is a hero. that's bullshit. what you are all saying is you are accepting the attention about this being diverted from the data collection problem and making it entirely about snowden and whether or not he is a hero or a martyr or a leaker or a whistleblower or a good guy or a bad guy. but his real true huge fuckup was in releasing just enough data for the nsa to admit to it because it is not illegal. that's not hero level shit, that's fuckup level shit. |
i said it before, i'll say it again: what the NSA does might not be illegal in the US when they don't do it to US citizens (really, they don't?) but it is illegal in many other countries
therefore i don't blame you when you are unhappy with Snowden but many other people actually appreciate to have their eyes opened. and no, the extend of the data mining done by the NSA was not public knowledge yet |

i have a Cuban friend who is already there and organizes everything for us no hotels, no tourist guides, staying with locals... should be fun :winkwink: |

the fact is he didn't reveal anything illegal and to make that worse, is claiming he is still hiding the really bad shit the nsa does because he is skeered for his life. and i am sure you mean you are appreciative of the fact that snowden's effort revealed germany's own snooping efforts and for also being in cahoots with usa intel snooping. |
we'll never agree on this - starting with the legal/illegal thing
your legal <> my legal |
Quote:
i know it's important at gfy to find things to disagree on, in spite of several posts completely contrary to that. but i am scratching my head why peeps think that just because i am stating he released nothing illegal that i am ok with that and the intel gathering. |
