A few years back we had a $100 gift certificate for a swank upscale restaurant in Niagara Falls - given to us as an anniversary gift.

We ordered a "dinner for two" selection from the menu - priced at just under $100.

When the bill arrived...they tried charging us $200 - double the price on the menu. The waiter claimed the "dinner for two" price was "per person". This wasn't indicated anywhere on the menu.

I refused to pay it and demanded to see the manager. He came out and attempted to justify the bill with the same bullshit explanation. I still refused to pay - told him it was a bait and switch stunt...and told him I'd be contacting Consumer and Corporate Affairs with a formal written complaint.

After a heated 20 mins. we settled the disagreement when I agreed to pay $100 (plus the drinks). I told him to fuck himself as I left...and still made a complaint to CCA a few days later.

This restaurant caters to/rips off the hordes of tourists during the summer months - but seemed to forget that locals keep them in business through the lean winter months. Word spreads pretty quick in the community about places like that.

I was gratified to see they eventually closed down about a year later. :)

i can say this, when i travel abroad, i do my homework and that includes going prepared to read a menu. all the charges were on the menu, i would have known that and you know what, still would have wanted to sit down and order $8 coffee and spen $8 listening to a band in a prime spot on venice waterfront. how fucking perfect is that? pretty fucking if you ask me.
