It's the old saying, "shirt sleeves s to shirt sleeves in 3 generations."
Poor guy come over from the old country. Works hard and becomes a success. Son takes over the business, gets richer but fucks family, friends and workers in the process. Grandson becomes a trust fund baby. Spends the entire fortune on hookers, blow and divorces.

Working Your Way Up

Truth is, starting out poor is a disadvantage. Look a George Bush, got to buy into the Texas Rangers a few dollars. Guy I used to lunch with had a chance to buy in when they were a new team and backed out. Still mad he lost a chance to sell for $100 million. I don't know his prewar history, but WW II was a great equalizer. If you worked and achieved you got ahead, no matter how poor your family was, no matter your education. Seems like everybody got a fair shot then.

My girlfriend came from a family so poor, that went years without running water, let alone hot water. They took baths outside when it rained. She clawed her way up from a waitress in a Denny's in Bumfuck, Kansas, to owing one of the most successful Country Kitchens in the US., in a place where Bumfuck, Kansas seems like a big city. One day, just walked away from it all. Said it wasn't worth the work, stress or the asshole she was married to.
She's broke, but you won't believe the credit card offers she gets. Still has one she could buy a house with.
