One example: the Genesis creation story. Don't take the word of your religious Aunt Gemima in regards to what it means. Either study a bit before posting or ask a Rabbi (since Jews wrote it and it was addressed to Jews). Holy crap, dude.

Genesis 1 is a poem. It's definitely not to be taken literally. But even if it was, the word we translate into "day" is "yom" in the original text. One of the meanings of that word is "unspecified AGE of time." In other words, Genesis 1, even literally taken, doesn't conflict with evolution. In fact, if you get your Aunt Gemima's interpretation out of your head, it actually describes evolution in a primitive way, long before Darwin (who wasn't trying to overrule the creation story to begin with, but rather discover HOW GOD CREATED). In Genesis 1, things start off void. Then water and land are separated. Then primitive life forms are created. Then more advanced life forms. Then animals, and finally humans from the dust of the earth emerge. That does a damned good job summarizing evolution, don't you think? Especially for a poem.

I'd love to say I came up with theistic evolution, but I didn't. One particular figurehead - you might have heard of his title - stated evolution is considered by the Church to be a very valid explanation of creation: the Pope.

If YOU are going to try to make me look stupid about things I study almost daily, you might want to educate yourself on positions I might hold. That's how good debators succeed: studying the opponents position. Note: your Aunt isn't a good source of research.

Also, Mutt, know that the Bible was canonized. It is NOT one book. It is a collection of many different books by many different writers who wrote over thousands of years, lived in diverse areas and times in comparision to each other, and had different intentions. Some is poetry. Some is other forms of literature. Some is meant to be taken literally. Some parts are meant only for certain people or certain situations that existed at the time of writing. Some is prophecy. Some is simply, "this is what happened" rather than "this is what you should do,"and is meant for us to learn lessons from. Some is instruction for all of humanity in the present and future. What it is NOT nor EVER HAS BEEN intended is for every word to literally apply to every person. I'm sorry you've received that impression from your Aunt Gemima who was taught that way by her mostly-illiterate Aunt Tilly. There have always been educated people around, however, that are constantly studying the books contained in the Bible, what they mean, and how they are best applied to our lives. Perhaps you don't wish to study it like that. In that case, you really shouldn't try to make yourself out to know anything about it.

Of course I base my life upon it. When one starts learning what it means and how to apply it the way it was intended, it's absolutely incredible. I love studying the Bible. It's fascinating. But when I say, "Study the Bible," I'm not talking about the Bible studies your grandma had in her basement. I mean this: I have literally thousands of books and other resources that I carry with me on my computers and tablets (plural - I have a laptop and three tablets with me in my hotel room right now) that I use to study scripture. To help put this into perspective, just ONE of those books, one of my favorites, is a commentary on the Bible's book of Romans. This one particular commentary is 830 pages long (Romans itself is quite a short book) and is published by Yale University. So when I say "study," I kinda mean it.

Compare it to a group of dogs where 1 dog dares to walk on ice where the others are scared to do so. People in those times were almost as primitive as dogs, i don't think you realise how backwards these people were compared to these modern times. You can't even compare it. And it these ultra primitive times they wrote up your favorite bundle of urban legends, the bible.

I would just like you to note that sexual shame was never ever part of the gospels. The whole sexual shame aspect of Christianity didn't even enter the picture until many hundreds of years after Christ. Frankly, the ones calling for Chastity and a male dominant class of religious leaders didn't come into the picture until Corinthians. Let's face it, that paved the way for the Catholic Church and they don't really have the best rep for a healthy attitude towards sex, much less a respect for tolerance of any sort if you take into account the Crusades, Nazis, etc.

Going back to the OT, the Ten Commandments are not even anti sex, just anti-covet, and there is a huge difference. Appreciating sex and sexuality and human form, considering that is what makes God's Creation viable in the first place, stands to reason that sex and sexuality are not the things that Jesus was preaching about. His earliest fans were prostitutes forgodsakes! Tossing the temple had less to do with sex than it has to do with misuse of the premises for the intended purpose of worship. At least that is what I get from it.

In my mind, any interference whatsoever causes an infinity of ripples that must be then corrected for, and then those corrections corrected for, and so on - except there's a lot that can't be corrected for because they will end up being mutually exclusive. Letting someone's grandmother live one more day taking up that hospital bed, having those interactions, taking up that nurse's attention, down to the less blood in the blood bank from an extra transfusion, all affects someone else who's free will is being interfered with as soon as god's finger touches one thing.
