I doubt it's that easy to eat such with a fork :2 cents:

E.g. where exactly will you pierce this with a fork? http://italpizza.tomsk.ru/images/catalog/ikura.jpg

Using fingers would be more traditional.

I think it's not a matter of rules but of showing respect by at least trying to do it the right way. Many Japanese restaurants have staff of Japanese descent who still take pride in their tradation and culture. Personally, I would feel bad in intentionally offending them.

Of course, if you go to one of those fast food Sushi restaurants it wouldn't matter :2 cents:

If I wanted to play with food I'd go watch derby.

That being said, guess I better either cross Japan off of my list of countries to visit, or just stick with Mickey D's.

You can also use the traditional woodsticks. I find the sensation quite pleasant as opposed to metal cutlery. Sort of like caviar doesn't taste that good with a metal spoon.

Baddog, I stand corrected. Salmon actually does thrive in the Pacific as well. It's just that I once read that salmon isn't normally served in Japanese Sushi restaurants and it's more of a Western thing like California Roll. Maybe Captain Kawaii could clarify that?

I agree 100%. Even in the exceptional case that you do get worms from eating Sushi (which is highly unlikely in any respectable Sushi restaurant), they are not life threatening and can be easily treated with over-the-counter Mebendazole.

Also, worm eggs in fish are visible with the naked eye, so you would have to be double unlucky (contaminated fish and blind chef).

But how did your reading of the Japanese not eating salmon lead to salmon not being available in the Pacific?

2MuchMark 05-24-2014 08:44 AM

Quickly before Fukushima makes it glow.

Because Atlantic salmon is a cold water fish and cannot survive in warm waters. The salmon species found in the Pacific is called Oncorhynchus (Pacific salmon). I was not aware that there were two salmon species plus my previous reading that salmon is not (or was not) being traditionally served in Japanese Sushi restaurants let me to that assumption without checking. Sorry for spreading false information.

I think you're missing out on the best fish in the world... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sockeye_salmon

I don't know what's going on with this thread or the idiots who have infested it, but the topic doesn't even make sense...

The best way to eat sushi is to saddle up at the bar and tell the chef there to let you try something interesting :2 cents:

mineistaken 05-25-2014 05:08 AM

For some reason I never even tried sushi. Probably because I wasn't tempted enough.

That's right! I was at a Sushi bar in Orlando a few years ago and told the server exactly that. Surprise me and make it interesting. And wow was it ever delicious. The only thing I didn't completely enjoy was the Octopus, but I've had it since then and now like it.

Family style. One of my favorite things about food is sharing the joy with others.

So far I have been eating it with wife only + my best friend from school and his wife...
It's not about the sushi itself, it's reason to go out and meet friends.
Recently the restaurant we eat in don't serve good food - that happens on that time, when the owner - a Japanese is getting back to his homeland for 2-3 months.

And the conclusion is : you cant trust everyone to take care of your own business the same way as you do it. :Oh crap

brentbacardi 05-27-2014 10:48 PM

Man I demolish Sushi. I never buy it straight up because I eat so much. I love it all! Anything Tuna is my favorite but I love salmon, eel, shrimp, crab, and often I just order a bit of everything and eat stuff I don't know what it is! YUM! :thumbsup

The hot green paste is called wasabi. Also try the pickled seaweed (eaten by itself), it really tastes good.
