Mach has always been the kernel of OS X and Mach was the kernel for NextStep / OpenStep which preceded it.

Mac OS X is UNIX certified, however the kernel is Mach.

While Cocoa and Cocoa Touch are ObjC based there will always be a place of ObjC , even running inside Swift apps.
