I'm mostly interested in the "average" citizen's experience. For example, when I travel to the middle of the U.S., it's pretty depressing and boring, but sometimes nice to look at. When you're going through a "regular" day, do you drive by burning refuse (I assume not), or is it pretty much like a European city? I really have no idea, geographically, either, what the norms are. I assume Moscow is quite different from border cities or war zones.

The people in European part of Russia live the same way as anywhere else in Europe. If you visit Moscow, you won't find it really different to other European capitals. As about the garbage, please believe me - Moscow is much cleaner than Rome, for example. The same applies to all other big cities here. Course there are many depressing and boring places to the East. If you look at the night map of Russia, you'll see that Asian part of the country is almost unpopulated, since most of people here live on the West (almost 20% of Russians live only in Moscow region and SPb).

There are many villages in the States for example (I saw a lot of them), but in Russia they all almost dead. Nobody wants to live there. The youth escapes to the big cities, so most of our villages look like abandoned ghosts. Yeah, they are very depressive. On the other hand, as I said above, most of the Eastern territories are unpopulated (there you won't find a single person for thousand of kilometers). Thus there is a truly untouched nature. So there is a lot of places to visit. E.g.: Baykal, Altay, Kamchatka, Ubsunurskaya Valley, Komy Forests, Putorana, Wrangel Island, Sikhote-Alin Reserve, Кurshskaya, Siberian taiga etc (<< make sure to click all the links to see the images).

As about the war zones. They all are localized in the North Caucasus region and caused by radical Muslim extremism there. It may seem unbelievable, but Chechnya is the most calm place there (the anti-terror operations are very rare and mostly being performed by the local police). Anyways, if you don't live on the North Caucasus, you won't even know there is a war.

Lets not compare NYC slumps with typical Moscow living quarters where 95% of Muscovites live. I've see them with my own eyes. Tall gray with light blue/green decor concrete buildings mixed with old 5 story building. Looks nothing like Europe.
Downtown is the bomb but 15 min ride on the subway and you see the real Moscow.

and far not perfect. She's a girl you won't notice in the crowd here :2 cents: I don't want to say she's ugly or so (she's good), but there is a lot of really outstanding girls you can see everyday while moving from home to your job or backwards. If you haven't visited Russia, you definitely won't understand what I'm talking about...

P.S. Sorry to tell that, but Finish girls are mostly ugly. I've never been to your country, but my son was there and I fully trust to his tastes (the boy was completely disappointed). At least... because I've seen all his girlfriends. Yeah, almost all of them.

I haven't visited Russia, but based on what I have seen here in Finland or in Estonia; the outstanding often means high heels, classy dressing and good makeup. Not that the girl itself would be any better. I don't even particularly like that look. That woman I like.

And that's your problem, I believe :2 cents: I don't think a Finish guy will have a luck with a beautiful Russian chick (they are so nationalistic nowadays), but at least you can look at them from a distance...

P.S. Estonians are nothing comparing to the Latvian ones.

I don't contribute to this. Also, your son's quality also affects to his girlfriends, and even f he would be gorgeous looking, not all Finnish girls like that much Russians.

I have seen Russia, does that count. :)

I don't even want Russian chick. Although I wouldn't let that hinder myself if I would find nice Russian chick, considering that she would want to live in Finland. But in second thought, there are plenty of Russians in Finland (at least comparing to other minorities/ not that much minorities), so you really don't have to go to Russia to meet Russians.

Anyways, what your son was doing in this "land of ugly chicks", as you put it? And it is Finnish, not Finish.

Wow, that's really eye-opening; thank you for the detailed response. I can related to what you're saying about the youth migrating to the cities. In the U.S., we have the middle and south as the "places you don't want to go". Generally, if you aren't on a coast (and north of North Carolina if that coast it the eastern one), it pretty much sucks.

I looked up Russia and Asia from space -- North Korea was obviously dark, and Russia's population density definitely looks concentrated around Moscow.
