That's just so true. It's easy to be stuck in that mindset because you just can't imagine that you could have so much more if you just WORK YOUR ASS OFF.

Yes but hard work alone is not the answer, either. I see plenty of people killing themselves working 3 jobs. Tell THEM to 'work harder' and they might shoot you - except they don't have the strength left because of, you know, working so hard.

No, you need a plan PLUS hard work PLUS enough flexibility and self-awareness to shift your plan and hard work accordingly when you are not succeeding. While working hard and never stopping is required so is a reasonable, obtainable Goal and Action Plan to get there.

A lot of people are willing to work their asses off (more than you would think) but they don't know what to do or how to do it.

The same can be said for high school teachers. They need to stop telling every kid to get a bachelors degree and instead teach kids that there are other options out there for them and help them find their way in those directions.

Well, colleges have those degrees because there are fools willing to pay for it. I have a friend who was so scared of his theology degree and getting out of school, he actually spent half of his life in school until he got his PHD in ancient Hebrew scrolls. He now teaches class in some Central Mississippi A&M University :1orglaugh I mean if this was some recognized school with anthropology and biblical studies department I can see that, but he is in the middle of nowhere with 30+ idiots sleeping through his bullshit lectures.
For some reason people think that just about any college degree will earn respect from potential employer.

There are millions of things out there that are sold simply because there are people that are willing to buy them. That said, I think colleges should do a better job of being realistic with people. If they want to major in Hebrew scrolls the college should give them information before they even start school that tells them what the average person with a degree in that field is doing for a living and what they are making.

I'm sure a lot of people with obscure degrees would have gone in a different direction if they knew what their career path was likely going to be.

For sure. When I say upward mobility I don't mean that everyone can be a millionaire. I mean that everyone can get enough of an education and a decent job and can live a decent middle class lifestyle. Some people will go on to more than that, but anyone can drag themselves out of poverty if they try hard enough. By that I also don't mean just getting another job. I mean working towards getting a better, higher paying job.

In the end if you want to be rich and have a site like youporn you need to be in the right place at the right time and do the right things. Those with vision and the courage to pursue those visions are the ones that ultimately make it big.

I had no plan. I could barely use the internet. I sure figured it out though.

All I had to have was determination. It's so hard for me to have sympathy for people who choose to stay stuck. I try, but it's very very hard.

Try to imagine they aren't you, with your unique skills, qualities, and mindset. Try remembering what it was like in the time between being ok, and pulling yourself out of it, and think of all the people who would have looked at you and the situation you were in, and dismissed it with a 'I have no sympathy'. Like I said earlier, it's easy to forget what it was like when you were in it. Think of the help you *did* get (anyone who says they had literally none is full of shit...) no matter how small it seemed at the time, and ask yourself if you've done the same for someone else today/this week/month/year who doesn't want a handout, but some direction/foot on the ladder.

^ not you personally, but in general. everyone isn't the same, and that's discounting those who are truly out to game the system and leech. Nobody 'chooses' to stay stuck, they just don't know what to do (again, not talking about true leechers) :2 cents:

I think they need to use some sort of practical training for kids picking their major. At first I was doing finance in college and got my wakeup call during summer internship. Everyone was thinking stocks, NY stock exchange, mutual funds. Fuck that, put on your Sears three piece suite and go sell 401K plans to 40 year olds. I watched those guys make million calls, set appointments, drive to boonies and then come back next day hangover and pissed because Baba wasn't getting that he needs to invest something in order to get it back later. This was my wakeup call. If colleges put those Hebrew scrollers behind the desk and make then look at toilet paper for 9 hours through magnifying glass perhaps they would get the idea.

Yes, work harder.... There was a time in my life where I was working four jobs and looking back I cannot figure out when I slept. My days started at 4am for a newspaper route, my real job at 6am at a restaurant, the night shift at a fast food place, and then at night working on a push crew.

Here's the thing about that. I can go to just about any cell phone provider and get an iphone or a basic smartphone (neither the newest model) for free and pay around $40-$50 per month for the service. I just looked on the website for my local phone company and to get a basic phone line I would have to pay around $35 a month. So having a smartphone is not a sign of wealth.

Another option is that I could spend about $100 on a phone and use a carrier like Ting and spend maybe $20-$25 a month on service.

I would agree that is someone can afford to go plunk down $600 for a new phone then maybe they don't need assistance, but having a basic smartphone is not really any more expensive than having a home phone.

Yes, but you had the flexibility I spoke of in order to figure shit out. That is what I meant. People who give up or don't even try often let any setback derail them. Sure, even with a well-defined Business Plan unexpected shit comes up and knocks you off course. But to have both the tenacity and willingness to try ANYTHING that works is how you get somewhere.

You know what I'm saying. You can usually tell in a few moments if a person you just meet has what it takes to 'make it' or not. You can see it in their eyes, hear it in their voices....

It is a tough balance tho. You have to both believe in yourself and abilities even when others do not - yet somehow take advice and listen to others who tell you a better way of doing something. LOL Oh the voices!! Why are there so many voices (in my head)??? LOL

Simply put : You will acknowledge a "funnel" in the way of getting rich but you don't see that there is also a funnel to get out of a hole.
You're not the only one in the hole waiting to get out.

You have an excuse for what you can't achieve and don't blame it on laziness; but Donald Trump will call you lazy.

I fully understand that getting out of a hole is hard. I grew up very poor and I have had times in my life where I was dead broke. I also know that I have a situation where I only have to worry about myself so I have been free to do what I needed to do in order to dig myself out. However, if you are a single parent with kids to care for it may be a lot harder for you to dig yourself out of that hole.

Often times laziness has nothing to do with it, as I said in a previous post getting out of poverty is not about getting a second job or working harder at your current job, it is about figuring out how to get a better job that pays you more or offers you the opportunity for advancement.

"Rochead" is out of his mind.

He's displaying the kind of misplaced anger poor people suffer if they do anything except
appear to be broken souls in public.

For all we know all the phones could be turned off; but these people are so paranoid
about looking broke that they pretend to use the phone to look important.

I confess that I carried a cell phone for a month back in the 1990's and it was never turned on.
It was in LA and I had meetings to go to.

Payday loans? Putting things on credit you can't afford, borrowing money? There's a whole lot of ways you can spend more than you make.

People do it all the time. They buy shit on credit (tv's, cars, etc.) and have bills like cellphones, cable bill, etc.

Then they pretty much stay late on all their payments just barely making them in time to keep from losing the shit they have.

It's a juggling act. And lots of people do it.

It wasn't so prevalent when I was younger because there wasn't so much credit, and people had to actually save up to buy stuff. But these days just about everybody has credit card debt and/or goes to the "Rent To Own" store and gets a big flat screen t.v. among other shit that they can't afford.

Sounds like my brother's ex-wife. She is 40 years old and her entire life her parents have helped her pay the bills. When she and my brother separated about 2 years ago she moved in with them. They got sick of her living there so they paid all of her bills and half her rent for the next year so she would move out.

She has overdrawn so many checking accounts she can't get a checking account without a co-signer. She lost the apartment she was only pay half rent on and is now sleeping on a friend's couch. Her car was repossessed so mom and dad went out and bought her another. At this point she will never be self-sufficiant

I agree. Shit happens in life and sometimes you can use help. My brother's ex has been this way her whole life. Before they were together mom and dad paid most of her bills. Then while my brother was married she would get money from her parent for all kinds of things and never tell him about it. Now they are divorced and she is still doing it.

I think it will be coming to an end soon though. Her mom's crazy spending has run through all of their savings and they just lost their house. Her dad is about to retire from his job so they will have a limited income and her mom has some health issues. So their ability to pay their daughters bills will likely be running out. It will be interesting to see what she will do when that happens.

Congratulations to your brother.

My brother might be one of the luckiest people ever. His ex is very lazy and she deals with problems by ignoring them and hoping they will go away. Because of this my brother got full custody of their two kids and he doesn't have to pay her any kind of spousal support. She just ignored the divorce papers and it came back to bite her in the ass when he got a default judgment in his favor.

But here is my point... They can afford $50 a month for a cell phone, $100 for cable, they have a flat screen TV, Xbox, games..... But can't pay their heat during the winter? If you can't afford to pay the damn power bill you sell your TV, sell your Xbox, and cut off your cable.

Too many people live off of public assistance. Sorry, this should only be for six months. After that, you are your own.

I have a fifty year old friend who has a thirteen year old daughter, and her entire life she has been subsidized by her mother. She's fifty years old and has never owned a house. She finally has her own place, a crappy apartment, and even then her mother is paying half of her rent. WTF? At a certain point in time you need to stop making excuses and just do it.

You still can't accept the facts of the phone even after I posted the link to the phone company I use.

Hopeless angry person.

God forbid that a family member help a poor relative out by paying a phone bill.

It's almost impossible to get food stamps without a phone.
