So you have been sitting on a surfboard when a shark has come up from behind, become entangled in your leg rope and then started to thrash about knocking you off the board and pulling you under water?

It would have been terrifying, to me being under water aware of a sharks presence is not the same as what he experienced.

average number of people killed per year by sharks? about 6-7

average number of people killed per year by mosquito? about 650,000

cows kill more people per year than sharks, hippos hold the record for being the most dangerous mammals

i like sharks and i hate when they are portrayed as evil killers - and even worse: when they are hunted because of something that is far from true

edit: but I would still avoid taking a bath with one, just in case he has a bad day or confuses me with a seal

Where have they been portrayed as an evil killer in this thread?

They are an amazing creature, however they are violent (they're a freakin predator that is their role) and it scares the hell out of me that I could have a limb ripped off because it was curious or mistook me for food.

That doesn't mean they all should be destroyed or are evil killers, it just means it is an extremely scary thought to think how they could rip through your flesh with ease, tear off a leg or arm etc.

Also in my case (and definitely dyna mo's) it is easy to relate due to where I live and how often I use the ocean.

They throw the word hero around now so much it cheapens it. But that other guy in the water who saw it and immediately started swimming toward his friend and the shark is a hero.

capable of disguising his voice, the land shark is even more cleverer than the great white shark

I hate the fear mongering that pervades when the media talk about sharks.

there's no fear mongering in that video. a great white shark is curious about surfers for one reason- and that's dinner. it's not a dolphin frolicking in the waves

I am just saying; there are always at least two sides to EVERY story - Shark survives attack by Australian surfer

You can thank Steven Spielberg for most of the paranoia about sharks.

Why the hell would I do that? So I can look like a weird turtle from below and get taste tested?

He got nudged by a curious shark. I've never claimed or said it was anything less or more.

I'm surprised monkeys aren't on that list - the macaques here in KL can be very aggressive - so much so the authorities have killed over 150,000 of them in the past two years.

Mosquitoes are no joke - and neither is the malaria or dengue that they spread.

Assaulted Jeffreys Bay shark still in shock after confrontation with Australian.

Quote:

"As a proud Jeffreys Bay local, I have been a surfing fan for years, and naturally me and all my friends were excited about this year's J Bay Open. We all drew names at the start of the week for a little pool, and to my delight I drew Mick Fanning! So as you would expect, I was over the moon when he made it to the final, and all I wanted was for him to do well..."

With a slight tremble in his voice, Hannes went onto say...

" As usual, we were all under the breakers watching the action, when the inner 'fan boy' in me got the better of me and I went over to Fanning to get him to sign my fin. I mean, once the heat is over, the surfers go back to the beach and we never get to congratulate them, so I took my chance. I swam over, but somehow got snagged in his leash, I tried to break free, and started to apologise, then suddenly, I was getting punched!
