Elon Musk Responds To Alleged "Battery Breakthroughs"

The “breakthrough” battery discussed in the PhysOrg article is of the aluminum-ion variety. Problem is the article does not list complete specs for the battery. It does state that the “battery was able to withstand more than 7,500 cycles without any loss of capacity” and that the “battery produces about half the voltage of a typical lithium battery,” but specific numbers are not present. So, this battery would fail the Musk “breakthrough” test.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk On Breakthrough Battery
If you follow the electric vehicle battery market, then you’re well aware of all the “breakthrough” battery technology out there; heck we have a whole category devoted to it to for one to peruse (“battery tech“) if you have a couple days to kill.

Truth is, most of these breakthroughs exist only on paper, to which Tesla CEO Elon Musk proclaimed during the Q3 conference call:

“My top advice really for anyone who says they’ve got some breakthrough battery technology is please send us a sample cell, okay. Don’t send us PowerPoint, okay, just send us one cell that works with all appropriate caveats, that would be great. That sorts out the nonsense and the claims that aren’t actually true.”

That basically sums up our thoughts on battery “breakthroughs” too. Until it’s a working cell, it simply doesn’t exist.

your argument is with elon musk, not me. tell him watcha saw down at home depot.

dyna mo 08-14-2015 03:17 PM

"And, as Musk points out, what is the energy and power density of the resulting battery pack?

I get very frustrated by all the BBB (big battery breakthrough) announcements we see that then seem to disappear without a trace. I’m frustrated that batteries aren’t advancing as quickly as I like (even though they’re improving in performance/cost ratio quite nicely), and I’m also frustrated with the wretched coverage we see in so many articles.

I wish more people, and not just the authors of these wide-eyed articles, understood at least somewhat all the hurdles between, “Holy crap! Look what we just did in the lab!!!” and, “I just bought a new EV with a 500-mile BazookaBattery(TM)”.

Trying to engineer a battery pack that meets all the pertinent real world requirements is a staggering task. Working in different environmental conditions, cost, scaling production, size, weight, power and energy delivery, safety, pack lifespan — it makes my head hurt.

But as I’ve said here before, I have zero doubt that we’ll see at least one BBB that makes it all the way to the showroom floor. (I consider ultracaps to be merely another form of battery, for the purposes of this discussion.) The financial reward is almost unimaginable, and there are far too many groups chasing that goal for none of them to find it."

those guys play rough, whether they realize it or not. i play rougher back. and we're off.

eV is the future. There is a diffrence between 18v and 20v batteries and 2015 coal useage is projected to be the lowest amount of coal burned since the 90s. Yet deny, deny, deny.. Write a bunch of BS and proclaim you are right.. As I said a hero in your own mind.

As I said already...for the foreseeable future, diesel will still be used for the trucking industry and taxes will still be collected.

Maybe Today, but tomorrow is another story. It's a mistake to dismiss EV's and rely on Diesel forever.

Look at it this way. If you were a big company that had to ship goods all over the country, you would be looking for ways to save fuel too.

It's all about the juice. You can say that the manufacturing footprint for EV cars is bigger than an ICE car, it's the energy that is used to move the car that is more important. Using Coal powered electricity is of course, ridiculous, but it doesn't have to be that way.

If goods and produce were shipped around the country in EV trucks it might lower the cost of those items.

Thankfully there are advancements in EV technology pretty often now so maybe soon, those truckers will be riding along on electrons instead of Carbons. 10-4 good electric buddy!

Would need the battery capacity to achieve the 500-800 mile range before any company would wanna add electric trucks to their fleet as a short range would create a backup of 48-53 foot trailers on an highway oasis ramp waiting to recharge which would block you from recharging your volt and refreshing yourself with an earth friendly beverage. :winkwink:

How fast is the recharge? Not gonna pay a guy $20-$30+ to sit there for 30-60 minutes considering there is already an 11 hour driving time regulation which could possibly be reduced in the future so don't have 30-60 minutes to waste as truck drivers are already in short supply and continuing to get worse...

It's not a real electric car. :1orglaugh

I was kind of amazed that Tesla could do it. And Nissan could make the "Leaf" electric car as well.

And then the best Detroit could come up with was the Chevy Volt. I was in amazement that with all their infrastructure and history...they couldn't even make an electric car.

I would almost bet the farm that the unions have a lot to do with that. Union workers who "specialize" in the making of combustible engine cars would lose their jobs with the much simpler electric cars.
And the ones that didn't lose their jobs would have to be re-trained.

Think about it: No more need for people to build or install a transmission for instance. Or a starter motor. Or a hundred other things that are not required for an EV.

Detroit is fucked. That's why the U.S. auto industry isn't dominating the world like it should.
Don't get me wrong...it's still pretty damn dominant, which is a testament to the industry. But if they weren't shackled by unions and state govt. over regulating and taxing them...I believe that the Detroit auto industry would OWN the world again.

And that would bring new (different) jobs to Detroit with good wages. Just like it does in South Carolina, Tennessee, and other states where foreign car manufacturers have built plants free of Unions and brought good paying jobs to their areas.

Hi Erect,

Yes I agree with you. 800 Mile range and fast recharging would be fantastic. Currently (ha!) I get about 50 miles and recharging takes 4 hours. Tesla's get about 200 miles in 20 minutes I think, and I would love to have that, which is why with any luck, I'll be buying a Tesla next year. Hopefully in the not too distance future though, batteries in all makes of cars and trucks will be at least 500 miles, with super-fast charge times.

Of course it is.

I can plug my car in at home and drive to the city and back on nothing but electricity. The motor that drives the wheels is 100% electric. When the battery is depleted, a gasoline engine kicks in that turns a generator that provides electricity to the electric motor that turns the wheels. You can also charge the battery while on gas, but that of course isn't an efficient use of energy.

You are selling GM short. It's actually a pretty amazing car. Not only is it electric, but it also solves the range anxiety problem that a lot of EV Haters use to bitch about. For typical use, it's pure EV. For long range trips, it's EV + Gas. It's great.

It might Suprise you, but GM made and sold on a lease electric cars back in the 80s or 90s I forget which. The majority of the people whom leased them loved them, but at the end of the lease GM forced everyone to turn them In and then GM crushed them. Despite the previous users wanting to buy them.

Turns out big oil was in on getting GM to walk away from the electric car which could of been a success in the 80s and 90s. You should look up the documentary called "who killed the electric car"

They did LEASE them in the late 1990's. Never mass produced or sold (big oil and union made sure of that). It was called the EV1

Also electric cars were pretty big as far back as the late 1800's.

Matter of face the taxi cabs in New York City were electric over 100 years ago:
"The first taxicab company in New York City was the Samuel's Electric Carriage and Wagon Company, which began running 12 electric hansom cabs in July 1897. The company ran until 1898 with up to 62 cabs operating until it was reformed by its financiers to form the Electric Vehicle Company. The company then built the Electrobat electric car, and had up to 100 taxicabs running in total by 1899."

And now in 2015...Detroit still seems to be unable to match what was already being done in the 1890's. No wonder that town is in ruins.

it was the late 90s, when gas was a dollar a gallon at the pump, the ford expedition was king, & nobody bought them except california tree huggers. they had their chance in the market. & fizzled.

as far as a conspiracy by big oil to take it out, its plausible, but unlikely, cause there were so few of them relative to gas cars. what would an oil exec worry about? maybe GM simply did not want to support parts for such a project as it would be expensive. that would be more plausible than big-oil-made-them-do-it. LOL.

the fact you bring up propaganda crap as evidence of anything shows how much effort you make to inform yourself.
