I agree completely with you it's tough that's why we can't be totally sure. The EFF does a good job auditing VPN's and they have some open source ones that can be effectively safe. but as you said, what if the EFF is in their pocket too :)))))))))))))

As to the guy who posted above, we work in pornography or most of us do so we do need to be a bit more careful than most when it comes to security. Imagine if Jeb Bush or someone like that or ted cruz were to get in the white house. Then you'd effectively be out of business or at in jail if you stayed in the US. Just remember Ben franklin; those that give up a little bit of liberty for security deserve neither. Or I think that is how it goes :))))

but what do you mean that they actually DOaudit VPNs ? first time i heard about it...
actually I had idea to create independent body of vpn auditors (that could be run by some experts, leaded by for example people from eff or torproject etc.) - and they could audit any given vpn in any given time. audits would be unscheduled and usually done by surprise, like one time in month. those vpn providers that would be OK with that, would earn some certificate - that after some time could become standard in vpn industry....

usually those who love power and are in power ,admire people like you. some even call them "sheeps". they love people who can give up all their basic human rights for various reasons
but you are right that having total privacy and anonymity requires a lot of work these days (or going offline), which is not comfortable option.
if the surveillance agencies would think the same like you ("we only target bad guys"), they wouldnt target whole societies and EVERYONE worldwide...what for ? maybe you will find answer by thinking for yourself, it doesnt hurt:winkwink:

If I recall correctly, Apple holds some sort of patent on it's built feature to disable the Iphone on demand (of the goon squad?).

It's bad enough that our privacy is considered valueless by people who would never accept that same standard for themselves.

Yes where have you been? Many many VPN's have come to be audited whether it was planned or was a move by law enforcement holding a warrant and for the most part they did exactly what they said on their page, vyprvpn is one that has a shady past on logging.

being audited on subpoenas and how they act with them - is different thing than being audited on vpn's network holes, backdors, logging - etc...........

I'm pretty sure if the FBI serves a VPN with a legit subpoena they will find ANY and all backdoor logging or any information of value and the only time that has happened to my knowledge was when the server was physically taken offline and manipulated by hand. I'm pretty sure snowden was a pretty big target for the US and he beat them with VPN's and TOR so I feel pretty safe using the same things. Quit being so paranoid, they don't care about you so quit aacting like they are after you lol.
