Even if this was true; the only logical recourse for both the Russians and the Turks would be to issue absolute denials to the story or to say nothing hoping it would go away.

This would create a hostile action between the Russian Federation and a NATO member -- no one whats this to occur and escalate.

The NATO coalition was bombing Syria for about a year. What was the result? ISIS just expanded a lot (more Christians were decapitated y Islamists). Russia is bombing Syria for less than a couple of weeks. The result: 3 cities were taken back under control of the Syrian government.
