I grew up in Milwaukee with Ma Baensch Pickled Herring. It's amazing. I always keep a jar in the refrigerator. From what I've read, it's especially a German and East European thing, though you'll find it at Kosher food stores, too.
The first time I visited Amsterdam - about 1981 - I tried one of those whole herrings - expecting the taste of marinated herring.
