I don't know. Maybe because they feel themselves Russian and don't want to live in a separate country. Maybe because the old people just want to get Russian pensions and Russian medicine etc. Anyways, that just my guesses. I think you should ask them directly (I believe you have a lot of contacts in that region). You know, the Ukraine has almost always been a part of Russia (Russian Empire and Soviet Union), so maybe some people just don't want to be independent from their motherland? Their ancestry were sons of Kiev Russia and now Kiev is another country. Why? How come? Some people just can't understand it.
