I always wondered why they didn't build a space station on the moon in some kind of bunker rather than in space.

It's relatively simple to get into orbit, but it's not simple to send people on a 500,000 mile trip through space, land half way and then get back again. If they could do that in the 60's then in 2017 there would be day-trips available for tourists

Day trips? It takes 3 days to get to the moon! Leaving and re-entering the atmosphere is not easy, and it's taxing on hardware.

The moons days last 13 days and temperatures reach 123C the nights are -153C. No water source. The list goes on.

Its not like a day trip to the desert. It's like 3 days of risking your life to reach the desert and 3 days risking your life to get back to earth.

You have a limited pool of space tourist wanting to visit the atmosphere let alone risk there life to visit a cold hot dusty rock by leaving & re-entering the atmosphere.

There are many reasons. The technology didn't exist (and still doesn't). But even if you could, you need energy, food, water and other resources to keep people alive. It is too expensive to bring food and water to the moon so food would have to be grown there, and water would have to be found there (which they recently did). Besides keeping everyone alive, the low gravity would cause bones and muscle mass to turn to mush. Then there's problems due to radiation, living in a closed environment and other things that need to be addressed.

I'm all for a Moonbase Alpha type place, but it's a really big deal...



No, NewNick is right. The hardest part is leaving the earth, and returning. Leaving the earth requires a shit-ton of energy and fuel. Once in orbit, a few seconds of energy is only needed to push the capsule out of orbit and towards the moon. The ship uses almost no fuel during the trip, and the stresses on the ship are much less. Of course there are all kinds of other things to worry about during the trip, but I think its less than escape and re entry.

When I first heard about this movie I really wanted to see it. If you like the movie The Shining, its great. It contains all kinds of interesting ideas about the movie, its references, filming techniques, etc.

But the guy who made this movie is also a quack. He thinks continuity errors are on screen on purposes, and, he thinks the movie contains a hidden message claiming the landings were fake. It is so beyond stupid, and it is such a stretch that I dismissed most of the rest of the movie. Too bad.

The technology available in the 60's would of made it impossible. If it was so easy, why hasn't any country (including our own) been back since? The moon is the most interesting near-earth object...yet we completely ignore it like it's not even there. Lets instead spend $billions$ more trying to get to Mars...where we've only had a 50% success rate so far. (or less)
