There is no need for this travel ban. There have been no terrorist attacks on the United States. We have a vetting process, it is in place, and obviously it's been working. If the Trump administration doesn't believe it's working well enough, they need to beef up the vetting process.

But the reality here is they know there is no need for this but they feel they need to do something. They cannot really beef up the vetting process; It's clearly working and there is not much they can improve on. However, they need to make it look like they are doing something.

Actually, there is very little that Trump has done that would be considered historically unusual. People are just so used to 8 years of Obama that his ways became the new normal.
