The ATF and DOJ made a determination in 2010 that they were not illegal under the current law. They did not negate law or make law. They can't do their job and prosecute a law that does not exist.

Meaning if someone wanted to make a law, they could. But they could not prosecute under existing laws. Since they were not a firearm, they were a part. Much as the parts are made and sold to convert a AR-15 to a fully automatic weapon without some crazy contraption, just replace a part. Who will go after those parts ? I'm having a hard time understanding the difference in forcing the allowance of a firearm sale to the mentally deranged but a legal citizen,
and prohibiting selling beer or cigarettes to a legal citizen 18 - 21 years old who is not mentally deranged.

There is no constitutional right for ordinary civilians (not in the military (or state militia)) to possess certain weapons that can be used in warfare or mass killings.

Congress can legislate reasonable gun control laws that ARE constitutional, Presidents can sign the bills into law, and if constitutional, the courts will uphold the law.

The 'bill of rights' has more than one part to it. I suggest you read it all.
And the constitution gives plenty of right's until they infringe on the rights of others.
So they always have been a 'within limitations' type of rights.
