This story sounds so bullshit from the start. I wouldn't be surprised if the girl, the boyfriend, and this "homeless man" were all part of the scam and they concocted this whole thing. Especially after reading the part where in 2012, he pulls almost the same "helping someone" thing. It has bullshit written all over it.
