Wow...So the WORLD Wide Web is now a place that anybody outside of the U.S. is not ALLOWED to comment on our elections because that is "meddling"?

Holy shit. This is the dumbest thing EVER.

Just think of all of the people right here on GFY who don't live in the U.S.A. and comment every day about our politics...Mueller will soon be indicting YOU for trying to change people's minds about shit.

What a joke.

It's like they are trying to turn our country into the old Soviet Union where we are not allowed to hear other viewpoints from around the world.
They are criminalizing social media free speech.

Bladewire 02-16-2018 01:26 PM

Putin has cemented destroyed Rusdian/ American relations for at least another generation. This really sucks and it sucks how he's destroyed democracy in Russia I hope his people keep fighting against him even if it means to the death.

Quiet down pal. People are trying to have a real discourse here, you might be able to learn something from people. I thought you had be blocked. Please put it back it will help us both out. Keep burying your head in the sand, let's not try to learn anything from the mistakes that brought us here.

CarlosTheGaucho 02-16-2018 01:28 PM

I went through the whole indictment, what appears quite odd is that there is a total lack of any quantification when it comes to describing the activities of those indicted.

The only numbers there that I was able found there are pretty much that cca 8400 Facebook users at some point clicked on an ad for a Florida rally, and that they at some point contacted about 100 US citizens in a FB group.

Please check for yourself.

That makes it quite difficult to get any idea about a potential effect of such campaigns. In fact it makes the content of the whole indictment look very marginal at best.

It would certainly make for a difficult case to persuade a jury that such campaigns would have a notable effect on the outcome of the elections, which is likely the primary reason why such claim is not even mentioned in the indictment in the first place.

Indictmemts don't lay out all the evidence, that happens at trial.

Indictments are purposely vague when an investigation is ongoing.

You trying to minimize what has just happened is part of the gaslighting tactic. Lame

I read it as well. It really doesn't say much, it just confirms what Facebook said 6 months or so ago. That Russians were buying ads promoting issues from both sides. Though it did mention that some people associated with Trump unknowingly may have had contact with Russian agents posing as Americans, but they don't talk about specifics at all. Really pretty flimsy right now, but probably more to come.

That's the very interesting part, I'm commenting on the US politics on the internet too, I've endorsed one of the candidates as well.

Does that require me, legally, to register as a "foreign agent" in US? Could I, as a person outside of US, expressing preference in US politics on the internet, be indicted for "meddling" with US politics?

It sounds absurd, but I would be frankly interested in the legal angle here.

Why do Republicans love Russians so much?
Is it because they all secretly like Putin, his tactics and his obvious over-reaching machismo?

Also: compared to George W. Bush doesn't Trump look (and act) like a bit of a pussy?
Let's grab him! LOL

People have opinions. But they have found vulnerabilities in American society that they can capitalize on. Its called thinking outside of the fucking box. Something too difficult for people like you. This is how people like Trump get elected. This is how we ended up in IRAQ. Because dumb rednecks, dumb Christians, greedy motherfuckers like you, and a ton of other simple-minded social groups think that our soldiers and prayers are all we need to win wars and keep the money flowing. We have the most powerful armies in the word, and they know they cannot defeat us through those means.

it makes sense what you are saying as long as it reflects your personal meaning you should be allowed to do it.

but here we are exactly on a point what we did not face before.
nobody really knows how much or not much the social media influence a personal meaning. the truth is mostly hard to explain while a populistic lie will be swallowed easy.

when it comes up to spreading fake news and getting paid for it, it has another dimension.

if we thing that thought even further the internet killed democracy because how can people vote when their vote is based on wrong information?

i really see a HUGE problem here for future generations and the only answer on that will be that elections will be done by machines and not by human.
i know this is a fucking dark vision but i can not see any other way that makes sense.

Trump wasn't a Republican, and here we are. He represents a party that doesn't like him.

I don't think the DNC "rigged it" against Bernie. Hillary was their candidate no matter what. They worked with her hand in hand before anyone knew who Bernie was.

It was obvious that the RNC and the entire Republican party didn't want Trump, but after a certain point Trump just had too momentum. The public wanted "something new" and an "outside to fix the system". That sounds like a great idea, but it's horrible. If four different mechanics couldn't fix your car you don't call in your landscaper.

Whatever. It is what it is. We have a someone completely unqualified to be in politics running amok in the White House, filling up the swamp with lobbyists. This is going to come crashing down one way or another.

Well I would even trust that, ever since the democracy started, people never voted based on objective information. Because those who need the votes have too much at stake and always need propaganda to sell to their voters. Politics is not exactly a clean business.

The only surprise in the last elections is that HRC had twice as much money and the whole mass media behind her and still didn't win.

Still, this is a very interesting case, even if the financing would be confirmed to be from Russia, it will never be tracked down to any Government official. So theoretically, if somebody outside of US, was a die hard follower of any of the candidates, and bought, for his own money, let's say a $ 100 000 worth of ads for any given candidate on FB, he would be indicted as well.

And what about a foreign journalist writing a partisan piece on US politics, getting paid for it, publishing it on FB, twitter etc. and getting thousands of likes, shares etc.?

At what point is an action on the internet something that would be considered "meddling" with US politics?

Playing a devil's advocate here, this is a very interesting case.

It's one thing to share your personal opinion online about a political candidate in a foreign country. However, if you are working for a foreign government with the intention of spreading lies on a large scale with the intention of helping one candidate win, well, yes, you most likely should register as a "foreign agent" and even then you might be facing charges.
