John Edwards used his own money to pay to keep his mistress quiet while he was running for President and when he got caught he ended up charged with five felonies because he didn't report it correctly. The only reason he didn't go to jail was because he was able to take the stand and convince the jury that he paid her to save his marriage not his campaign. Trump likely won't be able to make that same argument.

All those charges were dropped.
They were never serious anyway. It was political to take Edwards out of the race. Of course what he did to his dying wife made him a hated man anyway so it really didn't matter.

They dropped the charges after the trial. Edwards went to trial and the case went to the jury. He was found not guilty of one count and there was a mistrial declared on the other counts. The government then dropped those counts instead of trying the case again.

As for serious, had he been found guilty he could have gone to jail for 30 years. That sounds pretty serious to me.

You know what I mean...it was political. They wanted him out of the way. Just like they did to guys like Herman Cain when Gloria Allred had all those women that claimed he groped them. And then when he dropped out of the race...suddenly that was all gone.

It may have been political, but I'm not so sure. Reading up about it, the story first broke in 2007, but it didn't get much traction in the media until summer of 2008 when the primaries were all but over and he was long gone.

Still, he didn't just grope someone, he cheated on his wife and had a kid with the woman he cheated with.

In the end, I don't care if he fucked 100 mistresses and fathered 74 kids with them. I do care about campaign finance laws and I think they should be much stricter and the penalties for breaking them should be severe.

I disagree. We will always have different levels of standards. Some people cannot live up to a higher standard. Those who do not should not be trusted with high office.

Someone who lies on a daily basis and constantly cheats on multiple spouses shouldn't be tasked with upholding the Constitution. Back in April, when Cohen's office was raided, it was being reported that it was common knowledge that Cohen recorded some of his meetings and sometimes played the recordings for friends and colleagues.

Why would a lawyer do that? Because he deals with dirty people and wants to have the goods on them if needed is one possible reason. Also could just be easier than taking notes.

He's a "Fixer" meaning the person you go to if you want things done that isn't on the up and up. He recorded things to have something to hold over them or to protect his ass because he knew they were having him do shady shit that might be or was illegal

I record a lot of my big ticket business transactions for just those reasons. I video recorded my car dealers finance guy explaining where every one of my dollars was going with respect to all the extended warranties when I purchased my car. If a problem arises, the "I never said that" response will be very short lived.

It's mandatory that I record the leasing of my rental properties along with a video recording of the walk-through. When the lease date expires, "That hole was in the wall" or "The scrapes and gouges were in the hardwood floors" will be baseless in a court of law.

One production company literately staple-gun'd their multiple daily itinerary's to my walls. The lease agreement was for 14 days. That's a lot of staple damage.
