However, I'm still a bit confused about the tesseract. We first see it in 1940's Germany with the Red Skull which ultimately resulted with it in the ice with Steve Rogers until he was discovered just before the events of the first Avengers movie. Loki used it to power the portal during the battle of New York, and once defeated Thor took it to Asgard for safe keeping. When Asgard was about to be destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok, Loki snatched it again and that's how Thanos got it in the opening of Avengers: Infinity War. So, how did it end up in the mid-west during the late 80's for this story?

SHEILD had the Tesseract since the 1940's.
In the 40's, Red Skull finds it and somehow knows that the Tesseract used to be on Asgard because he called it the "Jewel of Odin" (Thor's Father). There's nothing (yet) in the movies though that explain how the Tesseract made it to 1940's Earth from Asgard.
The Teseract whisks Redskull away at the end of Captain America: The first Avenger, and then Steve Rogers crashes the plane into the ice with the Tesseract on board.
The Tesseract was found soon afterwards by Tony (Iron Man) Starks's father, Howard Stark who was friends with Peggy Carter and S.H.I.E.L.D. . It remained with SHIELD since then. SHIELD created "Project Pegasus" to study the stone. Project Pegasus shows up in Captain Marvel as you know, but also in the the first Avengers movie and in Iron Man 2.
In the 1990's, The Tesseract was used for Project Pegasus in Captain Marvel by a scientist to develop a Faster than Light (FTL) engine. The scientist turned out to be Mar-Vel, a Kree. We found out near the end of the movie that Captain Marvel got her powers when the FTP engine containing the Tesseract blew up.
In Avengers (2011?), Loki stole the Tesseract to open a portal so Thanos army could invade Earth. At the end the Avengers win of course and they send Loki and the Tesseract back to Asgard for safe keeping.
In Thor Ragnarok, Hella ends up in Odins Vault and the Tesseract is there. Later on, Loki walks past the Tesseract too. We don't know it yet, but he steals the Tesseract and then gives it to Thanos in Infinity War. Thanos cruses the Tesseract to reveal that it had the Space Stone inside it.
