Just to also be clear, i don't have a Rolex :1orglaugh

Maybe one day...

Which watches actually appreciate in value? Those would be the only ones I would collect.

But it seems that "watch guys" will often buy & sell their own watches to each other privately. So I would think it's hard to properly value what a watch is "worth" if you try to resell it yes? Does it just come down to however much a watch guy will pay for a secondhand Brightling, Rolex or Patek Phillipe?

Certain Rolexes (daytonas and subs) retain/appreciate. Pateks appreciate. Everything else depreciates (but can be great deals on the secondary market).

Breitlings aren't good.

I don't agree on that last sentence, I love my 806 re-edition :disgust :winkwink: Also there are certainly some good breitlings, just skip the overly flashy shiny car sales man ones. They had a ton of terrible designs yes :1orglaugh

It's not hard to value a piece. There are tons of forums, sites and marketplaces to use as references.

Personally I hate losing money on a watch, so I either buy pre-owned or new if it's Rolex. Try to buy a new Daytona at the Rolex dealer for list though ;)

sonofsam 03-15-2021 04:23 PM

Breitlings do not hold value..

Rolex hold/appreciate
AP have appreciated like crazy recently but I feel like they will drop in price when the market comes back to reality.. while Rolex won’t be as affected

Personal opinion of course

omega watches keep their value, if you buy the speedmaster or seamaster range, others, lower priced can depreciate. Also, some of these are quartz, not mechanical, so unlike rolex, hold the time better :2 cents:

CurrentlySober 03-15-2021 05:12 PM

I made a small fortune out of Claude Valentini and Oskar Emil watches back in the late 90s... Before people worked it out... :pimp

Most watches don't hold value like Fuze mentioned already. Hence the reason I buy mostly pre-owned.

Personally I don't like to see a watch depreciate however I am a watch nut. If I really like something, like the 806, I just buy it and enjoy it. I don't buy watches with the idea of selling them.

I also think Rolex will always be a fairly safe bet.

Btw did you see the course of the 5711 after they announced to stop producing it? Lmao, crayness. That's what it is :1orglaugh

I like the 806 reissue! I loved and miss my navitimer world which I sold for 80% less than I paid for it :( Was just trying to point out they are not in the same league as higher end brands, even if their marketing department tries to position them as such.

Used seamasters trade for 50% off retail, all day long.

Would have loved it if my old planet ocean kept it's value!

MaDalton 03-16-2021 08:52 AM

I wear the same Breitling for approx 25 years now, earned it as incentive for selling dental equipment

nothing else needed, also no collector

12clicks 03-17-2021 07:16 AM

I have a kermit, a coke, and a rose gold two tone yacht master. I think the kermit has almost tripled in price since I bought it.

Can't say about 90s, but these (Montana and Casio) were popular in the USSR mid 80s. A true legend :)

I had those when I was a boy. A nail-operating calculator, an alarm clock and more than 10 squeaky melodies, AFAIR :)

Not just Daytona. Try to buy a new Rolex anything from an AD for retail. Even an OP41 is unobtainable.
The Daytona was just as an example. Trust me I know. I want that new Cermit :helpme

That YM II is just too much over the top flashy imho :2 cents: But that's the good thing about this, as long as you like it more power to you :winkwink:

I mean it's jewelery :)

Two of my last watches were an AP Millenary 4101 and a Franck Muller Crazy Hours.

My new deepsea is the most boring thing I own, but hey, it retains value :1orglaugh

Too each his own :winkwink:

That crazy hours is a fun one though :pimp

I'm more a classic watch guy, GMT, SeaDweller, DJ, ExplorerI / II. 5 digits for the win!

What did they tell you? I was told maybe 3 years if I'm lucky. The Cermit is gorgeous.

What do you think of the new Zenith El Primero Sport? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52MsilCdphA.
Cant even get on the waiting list anymore...

I love the new Chronomaster sport but I have the regular El Primero (38mm) already and this one is too close being a white dial as well. I am eyeballing the black one though. Give it half a year for the hype to go down and I think you'll be able to get one with a nice discount at the AD or on the grey market.

used speedmasters have been known to increase in price by several 100% and depending on what omega watches, they can be a great investment!

I would check your watch again, you may find you´ve got 10 grand in the bank :thumbsup

and just to be clear, I understand Rolex or Patek pretty much has the watch industry in the bag. I´m just saying, some speedmasters and especially the old original seamasters from Omega can see huge profits too :2 cents:

Yeah no.

The only pieces listed over retail is the limited Apollo anniversary watch, and a physical watch worn by Daniel Craig in a movie.

One to daily wear and one to leave mint in the box

Stupid idea? 🤔

I guess a watch for many people now is simply a fashion accessory rather than an actual timepiece.

Times change. Literally i guess...

Mr Pheer 03-20-2021 06:51 PM

I'd never sell my Breitling Navitimer World. I don't even care what it's worth, because it's not going anywhere. I've been into all kinds of thing pertaining to aviation my whole life, and this is my favorite Aviator's watch, and I'm just not parting with it.

I have another watch that I feel just as strongly about, a skeletonized Tissot. It's probably not worth much, but it was a gift and I love it.

I have a few other that I don't feel any attachment to although they are nice, it wouldn't hurt my feelings to part with them. But no reason right now to for me to be selling watches so they stay in the safe.

Team IWC here. Also like the Explorer’s simplicity and thinness as a daily driver, but not a fan of the chunky hour hand.

I like the look of the white dial Explorer II, I guess the community disagrees with me :(

I'm a fan of IWC even though they are overpiced for what you get. The Petit Prince blue dials are just stunning :thumbsup

You talking the Explorer 1 or 2?

White dial Explorer 2 in the 5 digit series are pretty good/appreciated i'd say. I have a black one and considering to switch the dial for a white one :)

I still wear a wrist watch. I think it is classy and fits my outfits. I also don't need to grab my phone for the time.
