I have a 2021 911, I can't even see the engine let alone change the oil.
I'm not sure about the 2021, but other 911s that I've seen have the drain plug right underneath in the back, so that part is easy. Then you open the hood and take off the fan housing and underneath one of the fans is the filter. Not too hard and you'll save a lot, dealerships charge like $500 for that. :upsidedow

Yeah its crazy how they make you remove the rear bumper to do anything.

To be fair though on my 997 most tasks are easier with the rear off as well.

I never done it with my cars.
If out of warranty, what i usually do is buy all the materials needed, bring it to my favorite shop and they do all the hard work for me while I carefully watch them.

You can if you're creative enough. I couldn't put power steering fluid in my VW once because it was dealership only, but found a way to rig a pump bottle to do it. :upsidedow

Also, I thought I had to take my VW to a dealer to get an oil change before, but it was just a big plastic thing that I had to remove to get to the filter.

:1orglaugh:1orglaugh nice

hmm it seems you are right, issue is more scheduled maintenance versus doing it yourself

I drive an electric car I don't change oil anymore at all :thumbsup

I've actually started working on my own cars again after 20 years of just taking them to the dealer etc. I hate making appointments, waiting in line and shit, often having them fuck it up and taking it back again. Get a nice sense of accomplishment doing it yourself too. I just did an engine swap in my garage as well

At that point just buy some good ramps and a socket set and have at it. Give it a try

Same here. I got back into all the hobbies I had as a kid—guitars, fishing, and cars. Started drag racing about 4 years ago and went crazy with a hellcat build. It’s fun being able to build and fabricate parts. The longest part of an oil change is the oil draining.

Slop 08-15-2021 08:11 AM

I'd change my own oil if it was easier to get rid of the old oil.

I’ll admit, It’s not as easy as it used to be. I put in a lift. It goes up 4 feet. It helps a lot

Applebite Media 08-17-2021 05:59 AM

I use to love to work on my car when I was young. Things were much simpler then, no computers. I have never done an oil change but have changed an exhaust, brake cylinder, brake pads and calipers and other various engine items such as spark plugs, belts bla bla bla.....

Cars have become too complicated. And I HATE those damn color coated plastic bumpers!!!! Even the full sized trucks and SUV's are getting these stupid things! I could be happy with an old Chevy Blazer.:thumbsup

baddog 09-13-2021 12:27 PM

Motorcycle yes, but cheaper to have it done with my car.

I'm doing a transmission oil change and filter on my GF's BMW tomorrow oddly enough ... :thumbsup

It's quite a messy job, but I want to be sure it's done properly.

Look Chang 09-15-2021 07:35 PM

I won't never do this kind of dirty job ... :disgust
