Something not so usual:

The Cremator https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063633/

This movie was forbidden by occupying Russians and communist Czechoslovakian government shortly after it was finished (ca 1970). It resurfaced around 2006.

Same. 1 and 2 were sort of "cool" because they were low budget and very violent, neither was one I cared to see more than once. #3 had a bigger budget and alot less gore (was it PG-13?) and just boring overall.

I heard though that Evil Dead Rise is excellent. I haven't seen it yet but may check it out soon.

One thing I hate about "cheap" horrow movies are jump-scares for no reason. They are just stupid, noisy, irritating, etc...

I would love to see a good psychological horror movie. Violence is uncessary. "The Others" with Nicole Kidman was really well done. "The Mist" was great too.

One of the better movies I saw was "The Invisible Man" (2020). At least, the first half was great. It started with a woman being terrorized by an "invisible man", who may or may not exist. Is she crazy? Probably? What is she really seeing? The movie does all kinds of in-camera tricks like using Negative Space to make you feel uneasy. It was really cool. The last half of the movie dives into sci-fi shlock which is a real shame.

The Others (2001) - amazing!

The Mist (2007) - also great one (Stephen King novel)

The Invisible Man (2020) - interesting and tense, also inspired by SF/Horror novel of a same name, but from 1897! Writer H.G. Wells was obviously ahead of his time.

Indeed we are, great idea of starting the thread!

I've seen it, South-Koreans really can make some good movies! Ya'll remember Oldboy 2003?

Even Hollywood Spike Lee's remake from 2013 was good.

To get back to mystery ones, not sure how I forgot this total mindfuck - The Endless (2017)

I wasn't crazy about prometheus. I saw it only once and remember something about them either taking their helmets off or not wearing them at all on the planet they were visiting. I wanted to scream at the screen for them making a mistake like that...

However, this scene was excellent. Some people in the audience were pretty anxious and my GF was clutching herself and saying "omg omg omg!"

If only the whole movie were as scary and tense and cool as this scene.

Huggles 11-18-2023 11:42 PM

I'm watching Saw X right now... just a gore fest, 2.5/5 stars
