What is the standard tip % in your neck of the woods?

Here in the Philippines, there's no %. Whatever you feel like giving.

I am in NYC so the standard tip amount depends on what you are doing. A taxi ride I tip 15%, a good dinner with decent service gets 20%, depending on what food I am ordering for delivery (and how far away they are coming) it can be anywhere from 10-20%.

The annoying trend here in the States now are these damn apps that PRE-SELECT a tip amount or percentage, or ask you for a tip when you order coffee or do your laundry. It's gotten insane with the tipping everywhere.

go to Trenchtown or Tivoli? not recommended. tourists aren't wanted or welcomed there. I'm fine even as a paleface. I've earned my stripes

I love where I live. I am here by choice. I could move back to Toronto in a second, I own a property there, but why would I want to? I own a thriving offline biz here. I got my scary Jamaican shit towns confused, I did mean Trenchtown. :) I saw the Bob Marley documentary and also the classic The Harder They Fall. No thanks.

No matter how cool some parts may be Jamaica is still an iffy place if you wander off the tourist resorts. Or so they tell me. But hey, some people love living in Colombia and think my fears of kidnapping and drug-related mayhem are unwarranted. So be it. I guess we won't be hanging out in Bogota I guess (or Kingston). LOL

To each his or her own. :thumbsup

(Great song!! I love reggae.)

as a tourist? yes. and Bob wrote about the political murders and garrisons back in the 60's and 70's. as a tourist, nope, still not welcome. but I was getting slammed for living here

a single, slender, paleface on my own and I do everything I can to share with my town (St Ann parish rocks) and people reciprocate. it's really not complicated. act well, be well. I never want for anything here. anything I need help with it gets done. I do the same in return

interesting you mention Marley. reggae used to be as much of a thorn in the gov's backside as dancehall was in the past few decades

Black street music. poor people music. very scary. Bob got a pass eventually cuz the world loved him. dancehall artists got arrested all the time cuz...dancehall

it's very obscene. hide your children

I think that's politically one of the coolest things about this place. the role of music in shaping One Love, no violence, building better. Bob def had a role in that. I wasn't here for the Seaga years but learned enough to know how music helped shape change

violent garrisons created by psychopathic politicians are safe now. I live across the street from one. no guns, women and kids esp are safe there

people have tried to tear me down for not having kids, for working in adult, for having two cats and living in a country I love. it's just comical

and I tip like I should

the real industry isn't very judgmental. most people here have never seen a naked human thru a camera lens tho.. not talking about Brian mike. i think he produced some content? that homey probably bitter just being in Canada. the other Canadians are bitter on the board right now too. i hope they can hop on a plane to a warm place soon! winter skipped Thailand this year :1orglaugh

isn't than one of the thing being discussed though?

corps unfairly passing costs on to customers. servers feel like shit, customers get riled with them

corps still sitting pretty

I did three hours of skype tonight. didn't charge for the cost of my vitamins and meds cuz nunya, my rate for my time is my rate. it is infinitely reasonable for what I provide

and I'm not going to cross a service worker for not having the same freedom as me. these men and woman work pretty hard, in NA always pay at the table in bills, fuck corporate shirking their responsibilities to their own people

what I am suggesting is that you are angry at the wrong people. the ones you never see organize that

they may have pink hair and god help us all

Maybe you're right, and servers shouldn't be getting mad at the customers who refuse to comply with these new absurd tipping "rules" too.

so you don't want to tip on the bill or out of pocket. never had a cross Server. prob just lucky

why you mad? cuz a corp inflated your bill?

I love to tip well to anyone who does their job well and seems like they'd appreciate a good tip. But I do see this tipping direction we're heading, they're trying to normalize tipping for nothing. A bitchy waitress with horrible service doesn't deserve a tip, nope. None at all.

maybe her pet died, or she just ended a relationship or had a manuscript rejected. or had the flu..

but showed up for work so she wouldn't get fired

in a situation like that I'd just talk to her

feel you 100% on enforced corp tipping. my fav bistro place back in TO started adding an 'optional' tip to the bill

no suh. so the corp can get their cut and the wait staff have to, uh, wait, until payday for a fraction of that 'tip'? :1orglaugh

we pooled our cash tips at the table, always writing on the bill "excellent service, we chose to tip out of pocket"

it's a weird dichotomy at least as far as corps have positioned it

I just don't think getting angry at people who serve us food and drink and make way less than us are worthy of ire

it's the biz owners doing this

The best service I have ever seen was in Moscow (compared to the States, EU, etc). In a place where I now live, leaving a tip can be seen as an insult to the owner of the restaurant. For real :upsidedow

not too long ago someone I know from around adult mentioned that tipping in Japan is considered insulting

I was really interested by this so did some reading and yeps, he was right

it probably has to do with the fact that people who work in service in Japan are paid this crazy thing called a living wage

there, if one feels compelled to tip, it must be clean, crisp bills (as in not crumpled notes stuffed in a wallet or pocket), presented in an envelope, with a slight bow to show gratitude and respect

apparently an evening with a geisha is ok for tipping, but same deal. brand new notes, in an envelope, with a bow. presented at the end of the evening

very foreign concept to me but a fascinating concept that preserves dignity and humanity

tipping is def rooted in culture (and again, what people in service are actually paid as base wages/salary)

in the West I always get excellent service, probs cuz I'm nice to service workers and recognize they rely on tips to pay the bills. crumpled bills out of my pocket or not. please and thank you's also go a long way to preserving dignity for those who need those tips to maintain a living wage, without them feeling like shit for needing them

really interesting topic, how much the practice varies from country to country. where I'm at in a very small town most local peeps don't tip cuz they can't afford it. I can, it's the decent thing to do

I NEVER added the tip to the bill though back in NA. no fucking way the owner of the biz gets a cut for work they didn't do. cash out of pocket at the table

but yeah, def no universal global standard. for those who travel extensively probs good to read up on local custom beforehand. you being an excellent case in point on that. props for rolling with local custom

Socialized tipping AKA tipping due to "equity" :helpme:helpme:helpme

what I was referring to is actually the opposite of socialism (of which I am not a fan)

more like rampant unenforced capitalism where you make $10 to $13 in Toronto (try living a decent life in a decent studio apartment and maybe perchance paying for school off that?). average studios in rough neighbourhoods are $900 or more a month. before elect, before internet. before food. before public transit fare

is that ok? fuck no. but def not tips as 'socialist'. just recognize econ circumstances and pitch in where one can for those with less than us

those tips are absolutely the decent thing to do if one can afford them. if too expensive in a city like TO, order one less $10 drink and give it to him/her

there's nothing 'socialist' about it. corps underpay their workers and we decide if we want to be decent so they can pay their personal bills

decency does not equal socialism

where I'm at in JA. same deal. don't go to corp-owned establishments but fuck if I'm gonna pay the cost of 2 cigarettes for hand crushed ice and hand squeezed lime water that's $150

I tip twice the cost cuz I get paid in USD for adult stuff and $300 JAD (less than 2.50 dollars USD) is nothing for my absolutely fav drink

I brought up Japan cuz the point is...a country where in cities people in service are paid well

sounds kinda socialist to me :upsidedow

on this you are, respectfully, totally missing the point

Huggles 01-19-2024 07:13 PM

I went to a cold beer and wine store the other day and it never asked for a tip before, and this time it did, and the minimum was 15%!

THEN I went to fucking Starbucks drive-thru, and IT had a fucking tip option! Never saw that shit before!

But shouldn't market dynamics determine the rate instead of basing it off people's costs?

Remember, the price of goods on the market are not based on how much resources/labor were put on them but the SUBJECTIVE VALUE ** BUYERS** have of the goods for sale. See https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s...y-of-value.asp

Also for the list, Access Paratransit drivers, which may be a little confusing.

Paratransit is an extension of the bus lines. Access policy specifically says drivers are not to accept tips. And there's a reason for this. Access does not want drivers given preferential treatment to riders or breaking the rules in exchange for tips.

What makes this difficult for riders to understand is paratransit bus agencies often contract and subcontract with taxi companies, and it's not uncommon to see cabs picking up ambulatory Access riders. So riders, especially the elderly think they need to tip the drivers, and given the cab drivers make less than when they're picking up fares, the cabbies appreciate it.

But it's not necessary to tip the full time Access drivers.

I met some waitresses in Las Vegas. In a bar when someone ordered a drink himself she kept repeating she was there to serve us :)

In Resorts World the waitresses where so slow people started ordering themselves. And waitresses got a little annoyed when not getting a tip...
It was also good, it was hard to get drunk!

I see the shops and bars in Las Vegas pay now more than minimum wage. It is time to stop the inflation of giving tips!

Coffee shop staff in coffee shops where you have to go up to the counter to pick up your drink

Gas station attendant

Office staff

Share your list

If a gas station attendant does your windows it’s customary to tip. I do not believe in tipping. I believe in over tipping.

To be honest, I've never been to Japan (I'm not a fan of their traditions, culture, and all that anime/hentai/manga/kawai stuff, sorry), but I'm in Asia now, so maybe it really is a kind of Eastern mentality.
