Article seems a bit incoherent to me. It's talking about AI avatar chatbots of real pornstars, which does seem to have been a fad, but appears to draw the conclusion that its failure is because porn fans want the real thing. I think it's more the case that people don't want to talk to an AI pornstar clone when they can create their own AI GF or choose from thousands of fictional characters.

This part seems garbage to me:

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that nobody really saw AI porn coming until the leaps forward in generative-AI in 2022 (you can confirm that by the fact that most premium AI porn domains were still unregistered in 2021). It certainly wasn't one of the "few use cases of VR porn".

AI reminds me of a classic Twilight Zone TV show called Nice Place to Visit

In it a small-time hoodlum named Rocky gets killed by the police during a robbery and finds an afterlife where he can have anything he wants. Every casino game he plays he wins - any girl he wants he gets - any robbery he does works - there is nothing that he can't do or get in trouble over - he has perfect luck in everything and gets everything he wants. He checks the hall of records thinking that he should not be in heaven but apparently his name is there.

Rocky muses to Pip (his guide) over his lack of satisfaction at being given everything he wants with no effort or risk. Deciding that he will go insane if he stays in this stifling paradise any longer, Rocky asks Pip to send him to "the other place" — insisting that he does not belong in Heaven. Pip retorts, "Heaven? Whatever gave you the idea you were in Heaven, Mr. Valentine? This IS the other place!"

Rocky is now horrified and pulls on the now locked door, as he desperately tries to escape, Pip laughs evilly and maniacally.

AI is similar in nature - you can get anything and everything you want until eventually you'll get bored of it and like the challenge of a woman who will say no or at least disagree with you. Getting all you want as this show demonstrates is not always what's best and we will soon be driven mad at always winning.

I think a lot of people are looking at this the wrong way.

NSFW AI chat and image/video platforms aren’t built for guys who want a quick 90-second dopamine hit. Free tube sites already dominate that space.

The real audience is different: it’s users who want interaction, personalization, and control. Guys who want to chat with a custom-built AI girlfriend. Someone available 24/7. Someone tailored to their preferences. Someone who evolves with them.

That’s a completely different behavioral model.

It must be eating into the live cam market, and OnlyFans. NatalieK posted that Fanvue makes $5 million. Candy.ai made $25 million in 2024. Character.ai was expected to make $50 million in 2025, and Replika does about the same. I'd be surprised if the AI companion industry isn't making $200 million yearly now. And the NSFW ones allow members to make adult videos of their companions.

People want personalization with porn too. That PCMag article quotes Lexa Luna as saying she doesn't do anal sex in real porn, so she made sure her AI clone wouldn't do it either. Then they are wondering why the AI pornstar clones aren't making money.

AI-generated porn videos indistinguishable from the real thing are just around the corner. Age verification laws will also play a part in this too. Surfers will get sick of going from tube to tube and having to age verify every time, whereas one membership of an AI porn site will allow them to create all the tailor-made porn they want.

AI experts and leaders have been talking about a tsunami about to hit the job market, and it's going to hit the adult industry too. Filler lips and tramp stamps, and fake orgasms and overacting aren't going to cut it anymore.

The AI video models coming out right now are getting pretty impressive, especially for adult. Steve over at wowify.ai seems to be ahead of the curve on that front.
