Okay, okay, this thread convinced me! I bought a sushi making kit (with bamboo mats and rice paddles and such) several months ago but haven't tried it out yet, and this thread convinced me to give it a try. Today I bought two sushi cookbooks but before I make it myself I am going to have my husband take me out for sushi for my birthday on Friday. It'll be fun to try something new for my birthday and I need to try it at least once before I attempt to make it myself! LOL

I hope I like it because it'd be a shame to get something I hate on my birthday, but even if I hate it I could just order some tempura or something. There is a Japanese steak house just down the street. They serve steaks, hibachi, tempura and sushi, so I figured it'd be a good place to go because my husband doesn't want sushi.

Thanks for the tips, everyone! I think I will try some vegetarian sushi and also some california rolls with crab as you suggested, tayloryum. Rowan, I think soy sauce will be good for me. I've always enjoyed soy sauce. Mule, I might try a dash of wasabi in soy sauce just to see what it's like. Maybe I'll like it. :)

If anyone is ever in the Sacramento area, you must try Mikuni's. This place has awesome sushi. Three locations, dowtown Sac, Roseville and Fair Oaks.

:thumbsup SUSHI!!!!!!!

I hate sushis disgusting shit

stevecore 02-04-2004 06:08 PM

it's a lil weird but i judge how good a sushi place is by their tamago (egg). tamago is by far my favorite ending to any sushi outing...it's sweet almost like a desert.

best places i've found for tamago & sushi overall are the Fish Market in San Diego & Oishi here in the San Fernando Valley. both places get two :thumbsup

Few tips, if you want it nice & tastey, make sure you get your
hands on some spicy sauce, almost all good sushi spots got a
house spicy sauce, also figure out what you want inside like
tuna, negitoro, red snapper is amazing and tender, then pick
one of these, avacado [for best taste] or cucumber.

Make sure you ask how they prepare the rice, for best results.
Let us know how it goes, take pics if possible.

I love some and hate alot of them. For me the thing I hate is the sea weed. I have found that if you do not care for the taste of sushi odds are it is because you are eating the stuff with the sea weed. I have tried this with many of my friends who say they hate the stuff and when they tried some maguro or ebi or other sashimi (spelling) they loved it.

sashimi is the way to go. Enjoy food at its purest form

I'm a sushi fanatic...eat it 2-3 times per week, but trying to back off a little to avoid the whole mercury poisoning thing. I've only found one place, in Tokyo, that was better that the place around here.
