Sitting in the cubicle...

Its not about office space so much as it is distraction.

20 Minute drive to work.
15 Minutes get acclimated.
30+ Minute meetings.
20 Minutes fucking with a development environment that is subject and surrounded by mishaps...

LUNCH!

10 minute smoke break.
1 hr work.
30 minutes Q$A and new project requests.
20-40 minutes explaining things.
20-30 minutes miscelleneous questions.
20 minutes answering emails fucking the creative flow up.
30 minutes writing correspondence...

Drive home another 20 minutes.

What exactly was done during the day?

I am used to working 14 hours a day, and night without interruptions except to piss and eat.

With me when I am working only a few things matter.
The server and the creation.

Nothing else matters when in a "zone".

Just realize where you are and what is required of you.

Your expected to steal all the pens, paperclips, and sticky notes just like everyone else.
Oh, yea, your missing 1 to 1½ hours of checking your personal email and the bonus is
if your keyboard is making lots of noise then it's assumed you work like a bastard.

Tow the line and cash the paycheck...everyone else does.

I think this was a loaded question. You know that it is not bad to like freedom over a choice of corporate america telling you how to dress and when to show up, and which stapler is yours (or in Miltons case; which stapler is not his).

Just a note...

3 to 5 people is all it takes to make a living on the net.

1 LEADER IDea man (optional and must be good. DAMN GOOD))
1 Network/Host guy
1 Marketing guy.
1 CGI Artist.
1 Content artist.

The sum of the 3 to 5 carry administrative between one another.

Thats it nothing more to make a huge success on the net.

Is there anyway you could balance in between the two?
I've always wanted a corporate job, wearing a cute little woman suit all day and all.
It would be nice to compromise between the two.
Good Luck

I am actually gonna try that. Seriously...

I just see if you could do that, you could get the best of both worlds, have yourself in some fat cash, and stay busy.

Do you have a family, cause that might make it kind of hard, but if not go for it, and if you get tired of it, then you could come back to this decision and make it then.

I have nothing to worry about...

My entire exhistance is not dependant on a 9-5.

No harm no fowl.
Dont forget this in the industry...

YOU WILL NOT WORK FOR SOMEONE FOREVER.
We are in a constant dance and people move around (Some more than others) and at the end of the day ya ask your self. "Did I burn any bridges?"
Thats all that matters...

If somthing does not work out it does not mean that there is bad intent. It sometimes means ya value your time more.

I know what you mean. I worked in Insurance after college and at a Venture Capital / "incubator" firm after grad school. The pay was good but I felt my soul being drained out on a daily basis.

Back in '98 I left my Motorola cubicle and headed straight for the adult biz, haven't looked back since, altough I still temp corporate jobs from time to time, I get feelings of dread just thinking about the Motorola job, I even had a chance at a Creative Director position with all the perks, but way too dull of a lifestyle.

I actually relate quite a bit to what you said, my job consisted of way too much checking my own emails and hanging around on message boards because I would go for days without direction from my supervisors who themselves were doing nothing else but promote their own careers.

I prefer a similar production day like you described above. My friends and family still don't understand why I would pass up all that money I was getting for doing NOTHING all day, a dream come true to some, but that's just not how I like to work.

Dear Depressed,

Perhaps if you spent a little less time drowning yourself in self pity and subjecting the rest of the world to it, you would succeed. Despite of your horrible reputation, a reputable company gave you a chance, the chance you always wanted to prove yourself. Did it cross your mind this person went out on a limb for you and you repay the kindness with these ridiculous pity laden posts?

The fact is that you are completely grateful of the opportunity. You stay up all night drowning in self pity instead of getting some sleep so the next day at work you can actually comprehend the simple tasks that are being requested of you. How can every company that you have worked for have the same opinion and be wrong?

Wanting to leave early the 1st day, coming in late everyday, being a board potato, taking 20 cigarette breaks, being cocky and condescending to the other members of the team isn't going to get you the acceptance you ever so badly desire.

Employees are usually on their best behavior on the first few months. If this is your best behavior, who would want you to stick around so they can see the worst?

You ask, "What exactly got done during the day?" I'm sure that is exactly what they are wondering since 1 1/2 day for 2 bootlegged from another designer skyscraper banners and 1 entire day for an FPA is barely a full day's worth of work.

I hope this post will help enlighten you. Just my

Leslie

Wow leslie...
Ya couldnt ICQ me? Ya didnt know I was stuck in traffic?
Ya didnt know that I performed every thing ya asked and beyond already within my short time?

Quote:
"Dear Depressed,

Perhaps if you spent a little less time drowning yourself in self pity and subjecting the rest of the world to it, you would succeed."
I am already a success. I make enough to get by already.
You do not understand this? I like ya guys I really do. But this really has nothing to do with you. Its my thoughts not yours and its not about the crew.

[B][QUOTE]"Despite of your horrible reputation, a reputable company gave you a chance, the chance you always wanted to prove yourself. "[B][QUOTE]"

Your talkin out your ass here...
You know it. More on that later.
This is on the verge of slander...

Quote:
""Did it cross your mind this person went out on a limb for you and you repay the kindness with these ridiculous pity laden posts? "
"

Of course it did.
I like you, I think you do "OK" except ya do not have any understanding whats so ever of technical development or what exactly means work performance vs time.

You should know above everyone here that reporting to offices one time a week (like you do) to the work place really really allows you time to think about what to do without interruption.

Thats what I need as a builder.

"The fact is that you are completely grateful of the opportunity. You stay up all night drowning in self pity instead of getting some sleep so the next day at work you can actually comprehend the simple tasks that are being requested of you. "

Self pitty? Its not self pitty I come here to covort with the natives. I think ya take boards to seriously.

"How can every company that you have worked for have the same opinion and be wrong?"

What the fuck you talking about? Call Ron...
Call any other people...
I work. I do my job. I met dead lines and created positive income...

"Wanting to leave early the 1st day, coming in late everyday, being a board potato, taking 20 cigarette breaks, being cocky and condescending to the other members of the team isn't going to get you the acceptance you ever so badly desire."

Cocky and condecending is the way you take my information?
It is not cocky it is correct. I can explaine the reasons why but I do not think it would be good idea here...

"Employees are usually on their best behavior on the first few months. If this is your best behavior, who would want you to stick around so they can see the worst?"

You want performance? Ya got it.
Ask the people about the ratio's of what I built for them so far. Ya know what... compare it to your best click through average...
Ya will see my work outperforms anything click through wise.
Yes I am that confident.

Quote:
"You ask, "What exactly got done during the day?" I'm sure that is exactly what they are wondering since 1 1/2 day for 2 bootlegged from another designer skyscraper banners and 1 entire day for an FPA is barely a full day's worth of work."
I told ya already that I was getting familier with the network and getting oriented. It takes some study to realise development procedures. It takes time to realise what media is fine to utilise and what is not. Hence prolly ya got the best 2 fucking FPA's ya ever seen...
Let me tell you....
Its was only the beginning.

Quote:
"I hope this post will help enlighten you. Just my :2 cents"
Does not enlighten me at all.
Well actually...
It does...

I was not attacking you, I was not attacking the company this is my own outlook and asking about what I should do.

If you have a problem with it then it might be left best that I leave your company. I would never ever come out and openly attack you.
NEVER!

But for some reason you are assaulted by my words here on GFY which really... Had nothing to with where I worked. Ya want a guy that makes things happen or ya want a guy that just takes a check?

Ya want the truth why I left CE?

I left because I felt like I was just taking Ron's money.
His company is tight, it knows what it is doing there is no FUCKING around when it comes to what must be done and how to implement projects.

So there ya have it in a nutshell...
You insult me saying I am miserable and I am not miserable at all and where I find faults I aint afraid to mention them...
Ask ANYONE.

Sure I am negative in some ways I know this but it has served me well and allowed me to scrutinise where improvement can be made.
I was asking for advice and wondering if corporate life befits me. Maybe it does not. Obviosuly it does not when a supervisor decides to come publicly and insult me and my work ethic.

Thanks for helping me make the decision.

For the majority of us, the corporate lifestyle isn't ideal. We're self emplyed for the most part, or we work for companies inside of the non-mainstream industry that don't wish to mimic the rest of corporate America. We've chosen this industry because it allows more freedom and it's easier to advance if you have a strong work ethic. To succeed, you need to be a self motivator.

Corporate America fucks people...Our industry make people want to fuck. See the difference?

At the top of this thread, you said:
Quote:
"15 Minutes get acclimated.

30 minutes writing correspondence..."
If that is not ripping on a company and their ways of doing things - then I don't know what is.

You spent 30+minutes in a meeting, maybe... once. During our weekly meeting. And, all you contributed was references to GFY.

I'd love to know what you spent 20-40 mins. explaining, seeing as how you needed explanations on how I got a motion blur effect in Flash, you didn't know .fla's were cross-platform, and you sneered condescendingly at me b/c I *gasp* used a Mac to make tours.

It took a lot of personal strength to tell myself (and, management, when they asked) "it's his first week - he'll get better". But, after you brought horizontal text into a flash banner - that you ripped from me (which i don't mind, btw) - and it took you almost twice as long for you to rip as it took me to make from scratch the first time.. it's hard to just let that shit slide.

She's got 7 guys that make things happen. We've been making things happen for quite some time before you came along, and we'll continue to do so loooong after you're gone. We don't all come pre-packaged with an attitude and a lack of knowledge about basic design standards and practices.

Ask ANYONE.
Did you, or did you not write a diatribe on here just a few days ago about your depression over never being a "blinger". That, my friend, is being miserable.

And, yes, you are afraid to mention your faults. You made so many false statements in the last few days (and, I mean at work), that you shoulda been a politician.

We all need time to get "familier" (familiar) with networks and what-not. That's never a problem, it's expected. However - employers and co-workers alike also expect your best. If your best means butchering others' work (don't make me bust out that chop-shop job you did on the VC mailer), then... you need to work on your best, and take the cocky attitude down a bit.

As for the best FPAs we've ever seen? Not hardly. You used transparent .gif's throughout most of them, and you used a no-color matte background. That made your image borders very choppy and jagged. That's something most people who don't have their heads up their asses learn in their first few months of designing.

Jim makes the best FPAs I've ever seen. End of story. The best part, though? If he has a problem w/something he's working on - he comes to me and asks me about it. Because I know things he doesn't. Also - I go to him a lot, because he knows a lot I don't know. That's what we call teamwork. Give it a try sometime.

I could really go on and on about your flaws in this argument and many others. I could point out specific examples of when/where you were wrong. I could bury you with your own words.

However, I think you've gotten enough of a beating for a day. I wish you well, good sir. Consider this last week or so to be your first and last week in the class of "How to get your ass fired 101". And, it should be pointed out - you quit - no one fired you. And, we all thank you for not making us have to make the decision. No one likes firing the new guy - so it's better this way.

In the end - it should be known that I tried to be nice to you. I tried to work with you. I might have even tried harder - but, there's a lot of adjustments that I'm not sure you'd have made. Even today - those of us who physically couldn't get into work on account of the overturned gas truck were working from home (as I am right now). Whereas - you never even offered to do so. That's how you get ahead. Going the extra mile. Put that in your depression diatribe next time.

Good luck on future ventures. Let me know when reality calls you back, will ya?

EDIT:
Before you call people backstabbers, know that you're being quite the hypocrite.

I feel like it's backstabbing to pretend you "love" a company - then rip on the work environment, the way they do things, and how little time you spend working in a day -- and then you blame it on the company!

AlienQ and Vividleslie --

I never thought I would see the day where da' Boss Coach tackles the employee quarterback in a public message board.

I bet nothing was acomplished but role ambiguity and awkwardness looking the both of you for the next work day.

I was reading this thread and I did not take Aliens post as being harmful or misrepresenting of Vivid...he was just generalizing and yamming......not to be taken serious.

Alien is creative, and has always found more cost effective ways of getting things done...that comes from being a self starter for many years.

I would hate to know this little thread which started on a light note is gonna cause a breach between the team of Alien and Leslie.

I think you all need to take this off the boards, allow us to thank you both for the drama and entertainment, and COME TO the realization that everything is gonna be fine in the morning.....

No harm done, and lets keep it this way....

We all know I have alot more to say and alot more of what I want to say but I have held back for now.....

I like Alien and have always admired hsi work, character assasinations are pointless.

Leslie you hired Alien, you all have to learn each others ways and know when to react and when to laugh something off....

So you both got alot of work to do, because there is not question Alien will produce at the office and you will get what you paid for.

Do not judge him from the boards, judge him on performance.

If he fucks up, fire him.

If he pleases you, allow him to spew diatribe, he has done this for years and its all part of his charm :-)))

HANG in their ALIEN, you rock babee :-))
