140kph in 1st? :1orglaugh
And yes I've driven an E46 M3... the gears are stupidly short. |

I think I'd avoid racing an M3 with my 350-Z, let alone an Impala. :1orglaugh |
If the gears were long enough for it to get 145kph in 1st then it would be a dog off the line.
BMW claim 5.4 seconds 0-100kph... it would never get close to that if the ratios were long. It doesn't have huge torque (262nm) and it reaches peak torque at a lofty 4900rpm. BS everywhere in this thread.... where's that tool that said M3's have the same piston speed as an F1 car? :1orglaugh |
I have an M3 and yes there is learning curve on the SMG. Some days I find myself saying "I hate this car"! How can I say that though? Just seems so ridiculous to even think it, but I get frusterated with that shifting.
#1 I do manual shift. I hate the auto shift-- the timing on is sucks and its not smooth at all. It's too jerky, so I manual shift and I do not use the paddle shifters, haven't got that down yet. #2 Its like this.....the car is a stick, but you have no clutch and no control. Like I take off in 1st and the car starts jerking back and forth (you know when you firsted learned to drive a stick) and it won't stop. You can't put the clutch in to stop it, you just have to shift and then you are going all slow, etc. Errrrkkk! I have not figured out what I am doing to make this happen, but it happens quite often no matter how smooth I try to take off. My husband thinks I am nuts of course, because he thinks its just great and never has any of these issues. So, I have to think maybe its me LOL :) Anyway--anyone else ever have these issue with the SMG? |

Uhh, yeah right. 65KPH in 1st, 113KPH in 2nd, and 170KPH in 3rd.
The only way you'll see 140KPH on the speedometer while in 1st is if you're on wet pavement, drop the clutch and get only one tire to spin. Even then, it's not "easy", and you're certainly not GOING 140KPH. You'd need to rev the engine to at least 19,000 RPM to get 140KPH in 1st gear. Good luck putting a F1 engine in there. Quote:

I'd say in the snow it just might be possible :Graucho

None of this is possible.....Just ask the experts. Meanwhile, there were 3 people in the car last night who saw it happen. |
dude whoever said the piston speeds are not faster than an f1 car's does not know about them...and yes these cars are very fast. my friend was driving me to temecula in ca and he was going 146 *MPH* in the carpool lane. we only slowed down because we had curves coming up and no radar detector. the car jumps from 80 to that speed very very easily. th econtrol with that car is also beautiful because at that speed you still feel like you have control over the car.

My 2002 was one of the first SMG's in the south east, I know the new ones have a different ratio then the first ones.
Still got my doors blow off by a vette last month however  |

Lol, I'm not racing any more vettes, until I get the new ride :Graucho

Limp it back to the lot in three years and get a new color :)

I just picked up a 2004 M3, smg recently..
You guys ever notice it can get reallllllly jerky say early in the morning if you dont let it "warm up" I know the 745 does this as well. Just in between first and second. Like the transmission is fighting itself. |
Beat on it more it will loosen up!
|
Dude, you are so full of shit. You are saying that this "magic" M3 is geared twice as high as mine. Do you have any concept of physics? The engine does not have nearly enough torque to handle gearing that high.
Who did the engine and transmission mods? No stock E46, SMG or manual, has gearing anywhere close to what you are claiming. I am unaware of any street car in the world that will go 140KPH in 1st gear, let alone a high revving 3.2L. If you are so sure of yourself, do it again and take pictures to show proof. Otherwise take your bullshit somewhere else. Quote:

whoa 140km/h I actually didnt know that. Maybe on 2nd gear, but on first?
|
Oh and sure blah blah blah "it shifts quicker" blah blah blah....theres a huuuuggeee difference in the power. I've seen lightly modded 350z's lay the smack down on SMG's.
I'm not going to deny though that the M3 is a beautiful car....but to bad you can't fuck her. :1orglaugh |
The maximum piston speeds in an M3 are not even close to those of a F1 engine. The M3 tops out at about 8,300 RPM. A F1 engine tops out at about 19,000 RPM. The M3 is a six cylinder 3.2L. A F1 engine is a 10 cylinder 3.0L. Even with the shorter stroke of the F1 engine, the pistons are travelling up and down amost 2.5x faster.
Do you really think BMW is able to build an engine that is streetable and has a long life warranty, but yet has faster moving parts than a F1 engine which is designed to last only 600km? The M3 is adequately fast. It's not a supercar by any means. At 140+ it's not nearly as stable as a 911, a Mercedes SL, or many other sports cars. The front end gets fishy at that speed. That's why the M3 CSL has a revised front air dam which generates 40% more front end downforce. Take a curve at 140 and see how much control you think you have. It takes high speed curves with a controlled drift. It does not stick the curve like a 911. Quote:
