This is impossible to pick. I have to say that the Doors are one of my fav bands. On the other hand I love the Beatles, The Sex Pistols, Led Zepplin and Jimmi Hendrix.

You are missing the point, The Beatles, unlike say The Rolling Stones or Metallica didn't stick to one genre of music. They explored at one time or another, virtually every musical genre known... elements of country, classical, vaudville, psychedelic, Indian, motown and blues permeate their music.

But any real student of The Beatles knows that the greatest influence on them was 50's rockers like Buddy Holly and Chubby Checker.

Saying that the Beatles were a "pop group" is nothing more than gross ignorance.

Stones didnt stick to one genre either. They have rock, jazz, reggae, blues songs and so on. We can argue for decades since I'm fan of both :) I wouldn't call them pop myself too. I hear many people calling beatles like the first pop group, but as you said that limits them a lot. We gotta stick to rock n' roll title :)

Yes,no doubt Beatles were the band that influenced the most many of the later groups, greatest band of all the time. I remember like yesterday when I was 5-6 year old having a small tape player with a single tape, the most valuable one, a beatles collection tape.
