Stones or Beetles for early rock. Now I think that linkin park is breaking some new grounds.

Paul Markham 09-06-2004 10:20 PM

As someone who lived through it I can tell you the Beatles changed everything. Listening to White Album & Sgt Peppers for the first time was awesome.

But not to forget the contribution made by these.

Bob Dylan, suddenly lyrics could mean something.
The Who or more Pete Townsend. Tommy is a masterpiece.
Pink Floyd, look at the sales of Dark Side and not a "Pop" record.

The Stones, Santana, Steppenwolf, The Who and Zepplin were all great live bands.

Clapton, Hendrix, Skynard, Alvin Lee, Page were all great guitarists.

Unfortunately I can hardly think of two bands formed after 75 who hold a candle to any of these. Any ideas why this was a Golden Time for music and now it's just dross?

Metallica play loud boy music.

Whether it's inventive, trend setting or timeless is very doubtful.

It'd be too difficult for me to tell which is my favorite rock band. Zeppelin would be high on the list, but there are groups like the Beatles that are phenomenol. Their music sounds "poppish" by today's standards but it's just incredible. The melodies and harmonies they made are taken for granted now and seem 'simple'. If they didn't exist you'd be hard pressed to find any group able to come up with the tunes they did. The Who, Hendrix, and Rolling Stones would be in there too.

On your point about after 1975. There are plenty of groups that continued the tradition of amazing music. Pearl Jam, Aerosmith (ok maybe they started in '73? I forget), and U2 to name some.

I don't know if we get stuck in a time period and atrophy but I feel the same way you do but the date changes; instead of 1975, maybe more like 2000. Nothing I've heard since then compares to the bands listed here. Part of this is that I simply don't listen to what's out now so I wouldn't know if there is a great group or not. I'd rather not be bombarded with hundreds of less than mediocre bands to find the new shining star.

What I wouldn't include in my list of favorite groups/artists are those that have a tradition of being overrated (Pink Floyd) or which became famous because of the mystic or cult aspect of the vocalist (The Doors - yes they were orginal but aside from the song "People Are Strange", there really isn't a great catalogue there; Jim Morrison is a cult icon and that's why The Doors legacy persists). I wouldn't include AC/DC (great band, but not enough variety - they follow a format you can predict for the most part) or Metallica (great band but more bad/rough guy image association and poor singing which does sound good with the music though).

ColourMeHuman 09-06-2004 10:46 PM

First of all there is no best.

Here's some important pioneering bands though:

- Led Zeppelin
- Jimi Hendrix
- Rush
- Living Colour

buzzard 09-06-2004 10:52 PM

Pink Floyd ... Most influential, ahead of their time.

I agree with ya. Although there were a few groups from the 80's that were decent, such as The Police, Genesis, Van Halen, none of them had the same depth as the supergroups from the 70's. Even the groups that continued on for decades for the most part put their best stuff out in that time. The only exception I can think of is Floyd with Animals and The Wall, both masterpieces. Even then Animals was put out in I think 1977 or 78.

I've always felt it was the record companies that fucked up music, pushing the airwaves with this Madonna and Wham crap in the eighties and it just went on from there.

Naw the music industry isn't to blame. The well dried up. Like you said, all the groups that continued on didn't put out anything decent any longer. Groups like Guns N Roses and Nirvana that came along later had just as much depth as those 70's supergroups and are actually better than most of them.

Goatse 09-07-2004 04:24 AM

It's pretty close between Led Zep, Floyd and The Who.

scoreman 09-07-2004 08:41 AM

This thread needs a poll.

My vote goes to Led Zeppelin, with Pink Floyd and the Stones as runner ups. This thread has ALOT of silly choices though. I have to agree with others here that the Beatles are more pop than rock and roll. Rock and Roll means drum solos, guitar solos, drummers who die from alcohol overdoses, thundering music etc.

At least with Mettalica, Rush, Skynard, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, the the Who , Hendrix, etc you can understand where people are coming from. But Marilyn Manson or GWAR? give me a break...people don't even really listen to them right now---they have a minority audience that immediately disqualifies them from any greatest ever rock and roll classification.

Selling the most albums doesn't necessarily make you the best.

Otherwise Thriller or The Bodyguard soundtrack or Billy Joels Greatest Hits would define good taste.

IMHO:
- Metallica has killed their legacy with the last several pieces of radio-rock shit they've released. Generally being a bunch of annoying wankers doesn't help their rep either; neither did the anti-P2P campaign.
-Rush and Skynard are both completely unlistenable bands, to me personally. Queen rocked harder, and were less queer.
-Hendrix... maybe it's an age thing... but for all his "influential"-ness, I can't name one song.
-AC/DC.. Sabbath... not bad, but not in my CD collection either.

:2 cents:

Isn't "rock" supposed to be rebellious / revolutionary ? What do you do at a Rush concert ?

I've been to a lot of concerts, and for the most part they were just musical experiences; entertaining enough, but that's all. OTOH, if you were at one Marilyn Mansons shows at the start of the tour supporting AntiChrist Superstar... you got the impression a war was brewing. (it's a shame he changed direction for the hollywood coke rockstar bs)

I voted for GWAR half-jokingly.. the GWAR world is it's own universe and they're more of a comic-book than a real band. Still, they're good musicians who write fun/obscene songs and there's noone I'd rather go see live. Their crowds are the most violent, and their stage shows the sickest. No other band will shower you in blood piss and semen then feed you to a giant vaginal worm. No other band will raise Jerry Garcia from the dead just to kill him again. No other band will have sex on stage with dead children. No other band has a 20ft crack-addicted dinosaur. :winkwink:

The Rollling Stones
Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
The Who
The Band
The Grateful Dead

And I'm forgetting Cream, Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kiss, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, CCR, and many many more...

How can one answer this?!?!
