They get extra points for "paving the road" as it were. Then you add in their solo work.

They were the explosion that was rock and roll in 1964. It doesnt really get any greater than that. :)

Selling the most albums doesn't necessarily make you the best.

Otherwise Thriller or The Bodyguard soundtrack or Billy Joels Greatest Hits would define good taste.

IMHO:
- Metallica has killed their legacy with the last several pieces of radio-rock shit they've released. Generally being a bunch of annoying wankers doesn't help their rep either; neither did the anti-P2P campaign.
-Rush and Skynard are both completely unlistenable bands, to me personally. Queen rocked harder, and were less queer.
-Hendrix... maybe it's an age thing... but for all his "influential"-ness, I can't name one song.
-AC/DC.. Sabbath... not bad, but not in my CD collection either.

:2 cents:

Isn't "rock" supposed to be rebellious / revolutionary ? What do you do at a Rush concert ?

I've been to a lot of concerts, and for the most part they were just musical experiences; entertaining enough, but that's all. OTOH, if you were at one Marilyn Mansons shows at the start of the tour supporting AntiChrist Superstar... you got the impression a war was brewing. (it's a shame he changed direction for the hollywood coke rockstar bs)

I voted for GWAR half-jokingly.. the GWAR world is it's own universe and they're more of a comic-book than a real band. Still, they're good musicians who write fun/obscene songs and there's noone I'd rather go see live. Their crowds are the most violent, and their stage shows the sickest. No other band will shower you in blood piss and semen then feed you to a giant vaginal worm. No other band will raise Jerry Garcia from the dead just to kill him again. No other band will have sex on stage with dead children. No other band has a 20ft crack-addicted dinosaur. :winkwink:

Plus the lead singer Oderus Urungus has a bigger dick than any mortal human. XD

So is rock only defined by psychos like GG Allin?

I mean rock should defy standards and it's very existence or birth was a smack in the face to existing concepts of propriety... but does that mean that rock should be about eating your own feces?

GWAR rocks, so does Bad Brains and Pearl Jam and Bob Dylan. None of them had to defy all standards or measures of acceptability to Rock...

The Beatles is not a rocker, they are rock and roll

rock and roll = 60's and 70's pop

The Beatles = Elvis Presley, Drifters, Bill Haley, Little Richard, Roy Orbison, Temptations, etc

Yes, Homegrown Video loves the Grateful Dead

Well..

Beatles for song writing and influence, even though they needed key ingredients, weed from Dylan and acid from the Dead to create their best albums and most resonant music...

But...

If you are going with "Band" as in playing to an audience, which the Beatles hardly did when you get right down to it since they essentially stopped performing live by 64, then you have to go with THE GRATEFUL MUTHA-FUCKIN DEAD!

Played more sold out shows than any other band in history.

Almost single handedly created a genre of music, fusing jazz, blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, and more into one helluva psychedelic blend... "Acid Rock/Jam band"

Wrote music that no only continues to resonate and be played by many bands today, from alt rock to country to jazz but also to classical... which is only matched by the Beatles

Played under the Pyramids during a lunar eclipse, credited with aiding in historic peace accord between Egypt and Isreal

Played at the greatest rock festivals of all time, Woodstock, Monterey, Watkins Glen, and more

Music is all time related... meaning.... The time is comes to you in your life... When you're younger, you're open to new music and ideas, This is human nature.

People of varying ages here will all have different opinions of course.

For me... Van Halen with Roth and with Hagar--- both were awesome.
