Well, It's a LONG, LONG story..

Film is VERY competitive industry & expensive too..
I wanted to make movies, but gave up on that false hope & started to venture into music video..
I covered alot of the local bands til I made a name & got some national acts to work for..
I had my own TV program for 4 years, I worked for New England Cable News (Til I got bumped due to union rule..)..

Photography did'nt take off the way I had hoped..Got few jobs doing promo's for bands..Had few models call up for headshots..
nothing great..

Journalism..NO FUCKING MONEY..had some shit published as freelancer, but lost interest..My passion for writing was really in fiction..Time was an issue & I never really finished any story I started..

Well, to cut this short..(I piqued a few details in another post..) I had a crisis in my personal life & it all pretty much got real fucked up & fell apart...

Hey you guys what is wrong with hosting from home? I have a commodore vic20 that I run over a 2400 baud modem and I dish out Warez all day. My partner SonOfRage and I are making millions every day from it!

It can be done space, so if it's just an experimental "learning" type thing, and not based on being fuckin' cheap, then go for it... I'll even give ya tips.

I host from home myself. But... they're very low bandwidth sites, not 50 gig-a-day shit, I got a T1 pipe in here, and I certainly am not running Winblows 98. Plus I have an extensive background in networking, hardware & software from my AT&T days and beyond, so I know what I'm doing. I host some stuff here, because I can.

But I certainly would never recommend it with the parameters you've given and certainly not for the sole purpose of saving a buck. Cuz you're NOT gonna save a buck. You'll spend MORE trying to set yourself up to do it right than you would by just getting some pro hosting. I've spent shitloads of money on my setup. Again,... because I can. I do this shit for fun man.

Take your spare PC and turn it into a local server using Linux or FreeBSD, you can then learn everthing about servers htaccess scripting and the whole shit. You will be able to use it just like a dedicated server or virtual hosting package.

I dont know if it gonna work on Win98 but you should install Apache ,Perl and configure it. I know that it's possible to do on NT.

SpaceDog - Please just believe me. It's not worth your time or your trouble to try to set up hosting at your own house - even if it is for your personal pages.

Your time could be better spent elsewhere.

Here is some useful info....

Buy a copy of FrontPage 2000. You can use it to edit your web site galleries, plus it turns your PC into a web server on install. The instructions on how to serve your web pages to the Internet are written for the dumbest of us all, so you should be able to set this up.

You'll need someone to provide you with name service as well and you'll need a static IP.

One last thing, cable modems are built for downloading data, not sending out data, so you'll find that most cable modems do a piss poor job of hosting.

So basically, you'll spend money setting this up, you'll spend time, and the results will be piss poor. Your time would be better spent jacking off then venturing into this project.

Does anyone actually believe anything that Spacedog has to say about himself? He constantly entraps himself in his lies. Just study some of his 2000 plus posts. This youngster simply cannot handle the truth.

When he is caught lying about going to University for 16 semesters, he changes it to 9 semesters.

Actually he could have stuck with his lie because some Universities are on the quarter system and there are four semesters per annum.

You have to have static IP.
I did it with DSL.

1. Yes you can do it with win98 but it just allows
something like 10 connected at one time...
unless you buy MS software for around $ 600.00+
2. Been there done that, I was just serving some banners...
3. Don't do it...
4. Security... you don't even know what your asking for.... You'd be fucked in one week...
5. Why do you ask a question, get an answer and then ask 3 more when you get an answer...
