We just built our new home last year, and there were a few things we wanted. I went for quartz counter tops instead of granite. They were more expensive than granite, but granite is porous and you need to seal it once a year or so. Also, Adam made sure to beef up the wall in our theater for a plasma to hang on the wall, and he made sure that the surround sound wires were ran to the locations he wanted. We also ran ethernet to every room in the house, and two cable lines to each room for our Tivo's.

Things we didn't do that I wish we would have: Two water heaters. We have an 80 gallon now, but I find that it's not enough. We should have had one for the master bath, and one for the rest of the house. Also, after the house was finished we decided we wanted a TV in our bathroom. We haven't installed it yet, because it's a pain in the ass, but we will soon. Adam wants a small LCD or plasma in the corner so we can watch TV while in the tub, but there's no cable or electricity up there... yet.

You want to make sure EACH AND EVERY ROOM has at least gigabit certified ethernet jacks. Always do 2 per room for future expansion. You could also do fiber, but that is really planning ahead. :-)

What you want is a central wiring closet, with all the ethernet coming into it
so you can centrally manage it all with a switch and etc.

ALSO, specify that you want to be able to handle at least 6 phone lines
from the phone company, so the house needs 6 pairs of telco wire run looped to each room..... (I would make sure they do the phones in a star configuration and not a loop through the entire house though as the star configuration provides central management as well as easier and more flexable wiring possibilities)

:-)

Thats all, of course, if you want your house to be ready for the current and the future. AND it should not cost more than like an extra 1000 bucks.

That costs quite a bit more than $1k extra, if the house is of any decent size whatsoever.

:thumbsup -- always have 2x the lines you think you need and run connections to both sides of each room and even the ceiling, (yes the ceiling). cable, phone, s-vid, component, fiber, everything you can think of...it's 10x easier, cheaper, and cleaner to do it before the walls are done.
