now 87% of the tomato-meter.

Like I said before, the more critics see this film and the more ppl see it when it opens on Friday, the word will spread.

An early viewer in Minneapolis..........

"I went to a preview screening here in Minneapolis last night, 5/5/05. They said that we were the first people in Minnesota to see the move. Well, let me just say that this is one of the best movies that I've ever seen - Russell Crowe and Ron Howard have done it again! It starts a bit slow, but it gives you background into the life of Jimmy Braddock, a once great boxer who fell into hard times because of the great depression. Him and his family experienced all the heartaches that everyone else did at that time.

Even though he retired from boxing (he was viewed as a joke), his manager (Giamatti) got him one fight against a #1 contender to the belt. Everyone expected Jimmy to lose....I'll leave you to see the movie from here on out! Everyone was SUPERB in their roles, and there's no reason that Crowe, Giamatti, Zellweger, and Howard shouldn't be up for nominations. It was an outstanding movie, my heart was POUNDING during the last 15 minutes. After the movie, everyone stood up and cheered...EVERYONE! It was fabulous, and plan on seeing it again when it comes out Nationwide. Go see this movie!!!!"

reynold 05-31-2005 08:23 PM

It's indeed a very nice movie...

Bansheelinks 05-31-2005 08:39 PM

Appears I'm not the only one to gush about this movie, which I predict will become an instant classic.......

viewers reviews, not critics, from the special sneak preview on are basically saying the same thing:

"This is film-making at its best."

"All in all, Cinderella Man is a rousing, classy film that utterly satisfies."

"This was a great movie, and I would recommend it highly."

"Watch it and you won't regret I promise."

"The story, while familiar, is executed brilliantly."

"The audience was like a prize fight audience, cheering, booing, gasping, groaning during the fights. We applauded Braddock's wins, suffered his defeats. It is a great movie. Solid A."

"This is a classic film."

"The acting and directing are just incredible.

don't miss this dream movie?a true-life fairy tale. I'm giving "Cinderella Man" an "A++" on my Entertainment Report Card."

"...it truly depicts big city life during the Great Depression...you feel you are there in the fight scenes, i can't wait to see it again...the best film i have seen all year..."

"Nothing in this film needs to be changed. Everything from the acting to the soundtrack is simply outstanding. The audience is involved not only emotionally, but also physically. When a punch is landed on Braddock, the audience pulls back in pain with him."

"This movie makes my top 10 list of Dramatic movies from the last decade. A definite must see."

"If you want a thrilling piece of entertainment that will transport you to another time and place, if you want acting at its best, this is the movie for you."

"I do not want to give away too many details of the film. But I can say, it is the best in years and, although i doubt it will because of A Beautiful Mind, it should win more than a few Oscars."

.......and thats just from the first few pages of viewer reviews.

I can't wait to go and see this movie!! My Ex-boyfriend is responsible for training Russell Crowe during this movie!! So, in essence, he's responsible for his body and shape that he was in for the movie!! :)

Screaming 05-31-2005 08:51 PM

looks like a good movie

I know a lot of you missed on the theatrical run of "Shawshank Redemption" judging by how poorly it did at the box office. Now everyone I know owns a copy of "Shawshank" on DVD and it most certainly is one of the most beloved movies of all time. Its a classic that almost everyone missed on at the theater.

Don't make the same mistake again by missing out on "Cinderella Man" at the theater. I'm not saying its as good as "Shawshank", after all, how many movies really are?........but its going to be seen as an American classic movie.
Don't miss out like so many did on Shawshank.

I am still amazed by Crowe's performance. Not just the boxing. Although his boxing was the BEST I've ever seen portrayed on film. A lot of ppl love Raging Bull, and I too like that movie, but the boxing was ridiculous and way over the top. It was the same in Rocky, although I loved it, the boxing was so unrealistic.........if ppl fought like that and got hit like that, half the matches would end in death.

In "Cinderella Man", you would swear, although the matches were brutal (and they were far more brutal back then as they rarely stopped fights as fast as they do today), that you were watching something real. It was fantastic.

As for the acting outside the ring? Well what can you say? Both Crowe and Giamatti will be up for Academy awards; its a certainty. Crowe may not win as he has won already, but Giamatti was over-looked for Sideways and others. He'll be nominated for Best Supporting Actor and may win. Too hard to say a win though as its early in the season.

Geesh............classic and quality movies like Cinderella Man usually only come out in December. Lets hope this one is a summer sleeper box office hit. I can see it doing $200 Million domestically once word gets around how good it is.

Odie 06-02-2005 09:06 AM

yep they sat and studied the boxing tapes for hours upon hours..but the training involved is ridiculous..not to mention the dedication..

Acting in this case was not an easy task..he had to become the person in the movie!:)

so you're with me when I say this will become an instant classic? It'll be interesting to watch how the word spreads on this one. if its anything like the audience's reaction in the theater when i went to the sneak preview, it'll be a sleeper hit.

ArkansasDave 06-02-2005 09:55 AM

Cant wait to see it, Ron Howard is a great director :thumbsup

Doc911 06-02-2005 10:03 AM

lol thats EXACTLY what I did last Sunday when they had the sneak preview to Cinderella Man...........as much as I liked the SW3, it looked pretty lame following on the heels of watching Cinderella Man.

I hope other GFY'ers get as much out of CM as I got. Well worth the time. You'll get a lot of enjoyment going to both those flicks.

:thumbsup

good to hear. it was fantastic!

This from freezedriedmovies.com:

"In one of the more pivotal scenes, the boxing commissioner notes, ?My heart is for my family ? my head and balls are for business.? And Braddock is a man who lives this credo to the limit ? watching him shelter his family with his kindness as he puts food on their table with his rage is more than inspiring ? it?s awesome. His rise to glory is entirely deserved and entirely unexpected by everyone around him ? a potent combination with a thrilling, gut-clenching payoff. I doubt we?ll see more invigorating, crowd-pleasing cinema this year."

yes he will. will he win? probably not as he has won already. the one who will likely win is paul giamatti for best supporting actor, as its well known he was stiffed by the academy for his role in "Sideways"........they'll make it up to him by perhaps giving him this year's best supporting actor award

because here's a man, Braddock, who rises from the ashes or cinders, like Cinderella, and resurrects his career and his life........but the question remains, will his carriage turn into a pumpkin and everything fall apart or will he continue to rise? so he mirrors the fairy tale Cinderella that way.......hence the name

the last one there's somewhat of a spoiler in it, movie clip-wise, so you may want to avoid it before going to the flick.
