Ya! And no Charlie Rich? Can't forget the "Silver Fox"

Btw, speaking of Johnny Cash, he once proposed to my mom many many a long year ago, when he toured through her hometown of Fort Frances Ontario. True story, I coulda been CD Cash. Hey, that's not a bad company name!

I webmaster for a local alternative-country singer, and he's got some original pics of Waylon, Jesse Colter, Roy Clark, Mickey Gilley and Johnny Cash and quite a few other old country greats too. Check out http://www.electricrecordings.com and click on "pics"

He was supposed to be on the plane that ended up killing Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper.

"Jennings? big break came when he joined Holly's band, and one of the turning points in his life and storied career was his decision to give up a seat on the ill-fated flight that took the lives of Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper on Feb. 3, 1959. That fateful evening has been referred to as ?the day the music died,? the symbolic end of 1950s rock 'n' roll." (http://www.halloffame.org/news/archi...n-mg-0202.html)

I saw Johnny Paycheck (who also died not too long ago) when he was doing a military club tour - I saw him in Rota, Spain, the last stop on the tour. A couple of the women in the crowd I hung out with caught somebody's eye and we ended up in the Fleet Reserve club (kind of like a Navy VFW) in Rota after hours. The last thing I remember of that night was Johnny Paycheck and some Spainard who could sing just about every song Johnny Cash ever wrote, singing "Ring of Fire."

Paycheck was doing his latest single, which had just started to climb the charts back home. It was "Take This Job and Shove It." It went over VERY well at the NCO Club, let me tellya ...

I fly a starship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again.

Godspeed, Waylon.

Goddamn. That's sad. I grew up country...people say that, but I really did, no shit. Cut N Shoot, Texas. I'm listening to Waylon right now, in memory. :(

Johnny Cash (kind of the punk rock cowboy)
Waylon Jennings
Merle Haggard
Marty Robbins
Hank Snow
Johhny Horton
Willie Nelson (recntly saw him in Vegas, still one of the best all around performers/musicians out there)
Tom T Hall
Roy Clark (arguably one of the best all around musicians of all time, forget his Hee Haw days, he plays 10 instruments and plays them all well)

all pure musicians and and great songwriters....

The day Johnny Cash passes on is the day I'll probably be away for the computer for awhile...with endless Johnny in the cd player all day long

David Allen Coe should be in that list. :)

When I was 16 my high school needed a new football stadium and someone got Johnny Paycheck to come give a concert to raise some $ for the cause. This was a little rural high school with only about 150 students but he came anyway.
He came in his tourbus and needed to go to the store to get some stuff and couldn't find the driver. I was one of the people helping set up the stage and I offered to give him a ride.
I knew "Take this job and shove it" but didn't know any of his other songs. Was kinda cool to talk to him and go shopping with him. On the way back he pulled out a pocket knife and carved his name on my dashboard. Didn't ask if it was OK, just did it and smiled. Had a lot of people that wanted to look at that dashboard so it was worth it in the end. Too bad the engine blew soon after and I had to get rid of it.
My little brush with country fame.

Oh yeah, I banged a chick in the back of a van in Garth Brooks mom's driveway too lol
went to the same high school as Toby Keith also..

My only brush with country (okay, sorta country) is that I went to high school with some guy who ended up being a big star in Mexican music. Can't remember his name now. He was a jock asshole in h.s., acted like he just had a tan and wasn't Hispanic, I fuckin' spoke more Spanish than him, and now he's a star. :1orglaugh

(And before anybody calls me a racist: out of all the guys I've been with, all of them but one were Hispanic, and my daughter's dad is Hispanic. So chinga tu madre, pinche hijo de puta. :) )

At least there's no way he will ever do a career revival stunt like Pat Whatshisname who decided to try heavy metal. I love Waylon. I think I'll listen to "Amanda" today in his memory.

He died on my birthday, we were at Bahookas with tall fruity drinks and it came on the tv there. Totally changed the day.
