Whether you consider a full post on a message board advertising your product spam or not, there's another thing you need to consider:

If you're pissing off the very people you're trying to market to, then that's bad marketing. PR and marketing have to coincide with one another, and part of PR is tact.

Buy an ad spot if you have something to promote.

Why would you think YOU are allowed to "market" all over the place but everyone else has to buy an ad spot to get their product or service out?

Or put it in your signature like everyone else.

But spamming a bbs should NOT be your primary method of marketing... if it is... you won't last long... because you only get away with it for a short while before it gets you banned.... and then what? Start sending out the emails?

I would have to say that a message board like GFY is a completely different animal from email or phone spam. It is owned by someone and they can make up whatever rules they want. Also they can enforce the rules by disabling your account.

With that said, I think the owner would have to be responsive to how the group feels. Too much spam can bury a board, but too strict and people will not come by as often because, let's face it everybody has something to promote.

I think a good rule would be unless asked, you are not allowed to mention your program in the body of you message. Only in the sig.

Stop trying to justify your spamming of the board as some sort of solicited, targetted, opt in system. It's not. :)

Already said it, if you do it, everyone should be allowed to post daily threads about their product, and if that happens the board becomes useless.
