I am currently reading "Beach Music" by Pat Conroy. Conroy is probably one of the best "writer's" out there in terms of his prose, but the subject of his writing is not usually my cup of tea.

I liked The Mayfair witches better than the Vampire chronicles too. Demon Plauge by Joried McFate is really good. Here is author's site where you can read a sample.

Please tell me Snow Crash is better than Cryptonomicon. I got through the first 50 pages of that one, but his writing is so godawful that I couldn't stumble along with him through any more of a very interesting story.
