If the US is such a shitty place, why the fuck is everyone trying to get here?

Young 12-05-2005 03:47 PM

What is the definition of quality of life?

I get up in the morning out of my comfortable bed. Turn on my 42" and watch some news. Take a hot shower, eat hot food. Put on my nice clothes. Leave my 5 bedroom house breathe in the fresh New England air and get into my G35 and drive 2 minutes up the road for my hot Dunkin Donuts Coffee.

Thats quality to me.

Dalai lama 12-05-2005 03:49 PM

Ahem... actually, both North and South america are full continents, neither is a "sub-continent"

Central America is an ithmus. I believe that everything north of the panama canal is considered to be included in North America, and everything south of it is part of South America. Other geography nuts can confirm this or correct it if they like.

India has been described as a sub-continent, but not South or Central America. Sorry.

Oh, and no call for insults, people are just talking here. :D

Webby 12-05-2005 04:20 PM

Hardly surprising that highly industrialised countries are not in the league...

The US is big enough to offer a lot of variance, but prob overall - it ain't the cream for "lifestyle". The UK is a crammed up heavy industry - predicatable it comes in at 29th.

Wonder what basis "lifestyle" was valued on? There are a number of Centro American, Asian and South American countries which may have ranking for "lifestyle".

Right.. and what about the 2,874,567 guys from the other side of the tracks?

They wake up from an uncomfortable bed in which the whole entire family sleeps because they rent a garage from another family. They don't have a shower, they use the hose in the back yard and have to be quiet. If they miss the time frame that won't attract to much interest from the neighbors then they have to go without. They eat crap food that is what ever the roaches left from last night. They don't have a TV. They got their clothes from the service you donated your 2 day old black pants too (you donated them because after you wash them once, they aren't the same black they were when they are new). They walk 2 miles to the corner where they might find work that consists of back breaking labor for $20 a day....

Well at least you pegged your post right, clueless. North America, the 3rd largest continent, includes Canada, Greenland, Mexico, the United States, all the countries of Central America and the island countries and dependencies of the Caribbean.

lol no shit..

what amazes me is how people from countries 5000 miles away act like they know more about our country then our own citizens. which is rather amusing at times.. its almost as if the US is the celebrity of the world. were under a fucking microscope 24/7 and the whole world is watching. they pick us apart and find every flaw. all the while they're own countries arent any better..

the only thing i know is most of America could give a fuck about 90% of all the countries out there. i mean hell you don't see Americans starting threads like "Countries with the most beautiful women, Europe isn't in the top 10." so my question is why do you care so much about us? we obviously don't give a fuck about you.

I deal with an ad agency where they work hard in "real world" and then rent an island in Thailand and the staff move out there for two months of the year.

Not all, but a good number of folks who have ambitions of living in the US are from less well-off countries. The US is a paradise for em - it's a learned thing.

The flip side is.. more US people are getting the hell out and moving to countries where the US immigrants left. Kinda ironical! :winkwink:

Afghanistan should be on there too.

Apparently you've never been to Ireland, and you haven't done much research lately. Dublin is the most beautiful place in the world... I'm currently working on getting my citizenship so that I can get a vacation home out there...aka a place to live when Vegas gets hot as hell.

You're absolutely right about climate - I remember they did this poll before and people from Iceland, etc. were laughing saying that the people that made this list obviously never spent a day there!

But oh, wait, the taxes are low and so is crime ... great, but you're living in darkness, freezing your testicles off and counting the hours until your vacation to Spain

North America is a continent, which contails all of the countries in central america, Mexico, Canada and the U.S

BrettJ 12-05-2005 06:04 PM

I think people in the US need to realize that we might not always be the best. certainly in education we're declining everyyear. it's okay to love where you live ... but also see places that we can improve. instead of bitching about this new ranking... do your best to work to correct it

chshkt 12-05-2005 09:20 PM

That ranking shows that the americans need to wake up and do something...

Sly 12-05-2005 09:26 PM

If Ireland is such a fantastic place to live, why are there only 4 million people living there? Shit, I think there's 4 million people living in San Diego County, haha. I should send all of them this list and maybe some will move to Ireland.

If a country's population was a good judge of "quality of life", then India and China would be the greatest places to live in the world.

Not sure if this has been pointed out yet, but that article is from November 2004.

The survey was prepared for the Economist's "World in 2005" publication, with the remit: "Where will be the best place to live in 2005?"
