Shouldn't be surprising at all if US was not included in Top 10....American's live in paranoia! Thanks to Bush!

You're absolutely right about climate - I remember they did this poll before and people from Iceland, etc. were laughing saying that the people that made this list obviously never spent a day there!

But oh, wait, the taxes are low and so is crime ... great, but you're living in darkness, freezing your testicles off and counting the hours until your vacation to Spain

North America is a continent, which contails all of the countries in central america, Mexico, Canada and the U.S

BrettJ 12-05-2005 06:04 PM

I think people in the US need to realize that we might not always be the best. certainly in education we're declining everyyear. it's okay to love where you live ... but also see places that we can improve. instead of bitching about this new ranking... do your best to work to correct it

chshkt 12-05-2005 09:20 PM

That ranking shows that the americans need to wake up and do something...

Sly 12-05-2005 09:26 PM

If Ireland is such a fantastic place to live, why are there only 4 million people living there? Shit, I think there's 4 million people living in San Diego County, haha. I should send all of them this list and maybe some will move to Ireland.

Yep ... defintily an ignorant ... how dare he compare canada's lifestyle vs mexico's crooked cops

If a country's population was a good judge of "quality of life", then India and China would be the greatest places to live in the world.

India has been described as a sub-continent, but not South or Central America. Sorry.

It was more of a joke than anything.

Population is a hindrance.

Not sure if this has been pointed out yet, but that article is from November 2004.

The survey was prepared for the Economist's "World in 2005" publication, with the remit: "Where will be the best place to live in 2005?"

Ireland surprised me, but I have expected that most European countries will make the list

Then take into account the fact that well over a million people died in the so called potato famine in the middle of the 1800s, and a further 2 million or so emigrated to escape it.

I say the so called potato famine 'cause i personally think the British used the potato blight as a convenient means of attempted genocide. There was more than enough food to feed the people, but that's another topic for another time.

Pleasurepays 12-06-2005 06:48 PM

i am american and very well traveled. you dont have to travel far to immediately see that america is faaaaaaar from being at the top of the list for overall quality of living for the general population. but then again... america never tried to be and thats not what a free market economy is about.

alan-l 12-06-2005 07:48 PM

OK, OK, I see where you can from

now take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent

can we all be friends? :thumbsup

Marshal 12-06-2005 08:10 PM

very interesting thread... ;)

Rochard 12-06-2005 08:21 PM

Well, I don't live in a fucking hut!

health - everyone bitches about health care. I had my toncils taken out a few years back and it cost me zero.
freedom - I can move from state to state without any restrictions, and I can leave the country and go where I want at any time.
unemployment - I've never been unemployed in my life.
family life - I live in a country where the divorce rate is nearly 50%, yet I've been with my wife for 12 years and married for seven years.
climate - I live in Phoenix and haven't seen snow in about 15 years.
political stability - Even though Bush is in office, I don't see our government being overthrown.
security - There is a police station down the street from where I live and we have no crime on my street.
gender equality - With the exception of Steve LIghtspeed, every boss I've ever had has been a woman.
family and community life - I have a five year old daughter that has learned a ton in her first year of school. As for my community, I have everything I need with two miles of my house, including a race car track and an ice skating ring. I also have four great parks near my house.

I'm all set folks.

stev0 12-07-2005 05:26 AM

US and Canada both used to rank up near the top... the US economy going down the shitter and the EU kicking ass must be the cause.

lyn1 12-07-2005 05:50 AM

They got it all wrong. They are either all pissheads in voting for Ireland or they all like shitty weather. Have a mate who lives in Luxemburg. He has a highly paid job with the government, 32 years of age and can't afford a house - that sucks.

I live in the tropics in Australia. Coldest day of the year would be around 65-70 degrees Farenheidt, beautiful turquoise waters, the Great Barrier Reef, easy lifestyle, homes that are affordable, etc, etc. Sometime life can be so ho hum. Even murders and car crashes are reported on the national news as they don't happen frequently. Aaaah, what a life. The clots who didn't pick Australia as #1 must be pissheads.

chodadog 12-07-2005 06:39 AM

Australia is indeed one of the best countries in the world in my opinion. I'm pretty happy here, although i do plan to move back to Ireland eventually. But i know that i'll be making several trips back to Australia each year. I'd miss this place too much.

IMO, the tropics in Australia are unbearably hot and humid. Nice to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Czech 12-07-2005 07:48 AM

Being an Australian I am happy we are in 6th position although I have not lived there for the past 12 years :)

Not all people wants to live in USA, and actually.....USA isnt the centre of the world.
Shitty weather in Europe? I dont think so....it would be so boring to have 25C every day.

ezrydn 12-07-2005 08:09 AM

I didn't expect Mexico to be in the top 10 but it's gotta be higher than the US, if we're truly considering 'quality of life.' That's the prime reason I left the US and moved down here, specifically for the "quality of life." It's unquestionably BETTER here! One hellova lot CHEAPER, too!
